Is your child seriously curious about geometry and ready to play with the math, art, and science of it? Discover not just the math of geometry, but also its application in art, science, engineering, nature, and more. No previous knowledge of geometry is required for this class, but basic foundations of math (numbers, addition, subtraction, multiplication, etc.) are important. Each class we will: - Play games, solve puzzles, or become detectives solving mystery math cases to activate...
Students will learn about: 1. Math - Key math vocabulary terms - Classifying triangles by angles and sides - Classifying polygons, in particular types of quadrilaterals - Geometric elements like point, line, segment, ray, and angle - Types of symmetry and transformation 2. Science - Engineering, architectural, design principles - Structural integrity of various shapes - Math important in physics - Forces 3. Art - Art and math connections - Exploration of art from various cultures - Use of various mediums to create art
I am a certified PK-6 Virginia teacher with additional certifications and specialization in Gifted and Talented Advanced Academics and the inquiry-based International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP). I have over 15 years of experience teaching for schools, homeschool groups, and families around the world. I believe all children have an inherent love for learning, and, because I love math and believe math literacy is an essential skill that all children can learn to the highest levels, I have specialized in math and STEAM-related education.
Your child will likely be inspired to keep learning and continue working on hands-on projects after class. Plan on an hour of additional time between each class.
Class Materials: - For all our classes, students should always have a pencil, paper (or whiteboard and marker), scissors, colored pencils/markers/crayons on hand, ruler, and a protractor on hand. A supply list will be emailed a week before the camp if additional materials are suggested or required. - Exact supplies may vary depending on which project(s) your child chooses to do, so not all materials may be needed or your child may want to creatively alter the challenges requiring slightly different materials. However, all projects can be done using standard children's art supplies like colored pencils, markers, paints, etc. *Note: One Beast Academy online account will be used for optional homework assignments. One account is included with every student enrolled and will be available for use throughout the duration of the class at NO ADDITIONAL COST.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
40 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
