Class Experience

This class will go through the first 8 weeks of a standard high-school level Geometry class. Starting with standard review and moving into the more advanced topics. A good understanding of Algebra 1 topics is needed to understand much of this topic, I offer an "Algebra 1 for those who hate math" class as well if you need to brush up on that. Homework will include problems for each unit as well as any specialized practice that has been identified for each student. Learner progress will be evaluated by examining homework problems and the practice mid-term.

We will learn the following topics:
1. Review - We will review acute, obtuse, right angles; polygons from 1-9 sides; and square, rectangle, triangle, and circle area.

2. Transformations - We will learn about the four different transformations: translation, rotation, reflection, and dilation. We will also work on symmetry of shapes and how that affects things.

3. Congruence 1 - We will look at how congruence affects transformations. After that, we will work on how triangles and quadrilaterals are congruent.

4. Congruence 2 - We will finish up work on congruence of triangles and quadrilaterals followed by constructing bisectors of both lines and angles.

5. Similarity - We will discuss what similarity means in Geometry and how it differs from our daily use of the word. We will then put this into action with triangles and then how to work with angle bisectors in this context.

6. Review for Mid-terms - This should be around the time for mid-terms so we will spend time reviewing for those tests and take a practice mid-term for homework this week.

7. Right Triangles - We will work with Pythagorean theorem, special right triangles and then introduce trigonometric ratios.

8. Right Triangles(Trig) - We will put trigonometric ratios into practice with sine and cosine.

Supply List
I will be using the Tutor in a Book's Geometry book. This is not required for the students but it will be helpful for review outside of class if they need that. The book is available used for around $13 or new for $24. Again it is not required.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

I offer this class because I have tutored many students who have this idea that "Geometry is not for me" or "I hate Geometry". I've found that, with almost every student I've tutored, it is a lack of understanding the basics that causes this to happen. With a focus on the basics at the beginning and soft, encouraging responses to difficulties most students come to enjoy Geometry as they start to get questions right!
