Geometry: Distance and Midpoint on the Coordinate Plane

In this 45 min session, students will develop a more precise understanding of how to find both the distance and midpoint between two points on the coordinate plane. 

Objective: Explore methods of finding the distance between two points and use the Midpoint Formula to find the midpoint.

The lesson will be broken down into 3 parts:
Part 1: UNDERSTAND HOW TO FIND THE MIDPOINT
Students will explore and practice finding the midpoint of a segment on the coordinate plane.

Part 2: UNDERSTAND HOW TO FIND THE DISTANCE
Students will explore two methods (Distance Formula vs. Pythagorean Theorem) of finding the distance between two points on the coordinate plane.

Part 3: PRACTICE FINDING THE MIDPOINT AND DISTANCE
To conclude the lesson, students will practice finding the midpoint of a segment and distance between two points using the method they are most comfortable with.

Students are expected to actively engage in each part of the lesson and to ask clarifying questions freely and confidently. Although intended as a review, this lesson can also serve as an introduction to the topics listed above.
