Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 9
Welcome to GEOLOGY SUMMER BOOT CAMP - please also see my 4 Day Boot Camps for shorter courses and my Summer Semester classes for longer courses,

This course focuses on the most dramatic physical forces on Earth, with the aim of making learning fun and exhilarating. I think making learning enjoyable and bringing science to life is the best way to get kids engaged and learning without realising it. Please let me know if there is a time and day that suits you best and I can schedule this series for you a month ahead hopefully. Please note that children in the lower end of the age range may find some topics slightly advanced for them.

This course focuses on some of the most exciting Geological and Geophysical processes that formed the Earth and still move the continents today: building mountains, setting off earthquakes and feeding volcanic eruptions. We also look at the Carbon Cycle and how this is linked to the Greenhouse Effect and Global Warming. This is not a complete Earth Science curriculum but covers many of the key aspects of the Geology part of many courses taught in schools. More details of the 10 week course can be found below. No previous experience necessary.

10) THE GEOLOGY OF NORTH AMERICA

▬▬▬▬▬▬ CLASS STYLE ▬▬▬▬▬
I use PowerPoint presentations for all my classes, so I can mix text and multimedia and make the class more interesting. This class will be run using an "intro-discussion-repeat" format. This means I will take a few minutes to introduce a topic, using images or videos wherever appropriate in order to bring the subject alive. Then we will pause to take questions and make sure everyone is keeping up. Then we'll move on to the next exciting sub-topic and supporting material, and then pause for questions after that one too. This means that you can enjoy the class however you like. Speak up and get involved and ask questions, or just listen and enjoy with no pressure. If you like this class then you check out my full "Earth Science" courses, with subjects cherry picked to choose the most interesting, accessible and relevant Earth Science subjects for kids, so they learn to enjoy exploring the world around them.
Learning Goals
* Describe how the Rock Cyle works
* Analyze different rocks and rock formations
* Explain how science progressed to accept the Plate Tectonics Theory
* Determine why some fossil sites are better than others
* Use a model to explain how the continent of North America formed
* Engage in arguments about how extracting fossil fuels is linked to climate change

Syllabus

10 Lessons
over 10 Weeks
Lesson 1:
Rock Types & Geology as a Science
In this class I give an overview of the course, covering the basics principles of Geology and the main topics we will cover. I also point out the many exciting careers that studying Geology can lead to.
50 mins online live lesson
Lesson 2:
Minerals, Gems & Precious Metals
In this class we define what a Mineral is and what makes some minerals precious Gems. We then look at where and how precious metals are mined.
50 mins online live lesson
Lesson 3:
Plate Tectonics, Pangea & Formation of the Earth
In this class we go from the formation of the Sun and the Solar System, all the way through the formation of the Earth, the Moon and each supercontinent, including Pangea. And end up looking at what the Earth Might look like 250 million years in the future when Future Pangea forms.
50 mins online live lesson
Lesson 4:
The Structure of The Earth - Seismic Waves & The Core
In this class we go from the formation of the Sun and the Solar System, all the way through the formation of the Earth, the Moon and each supercontinent, including Pangea. And end up looking at what the Earth Might look like 250 million years in the future when Future Pangea forms.

Other Details

Learning Needs
Structured lecture classes, so participation optional, relieves anxiety Mixed media slides for different learning styles Engaging topics keeps attention Slides can be seen before class Multi-choice questions avoids penalising spelling
Parental Guidance
Some classes talks about Global Warming and Climate Change causing more frequent natural disasters. It also talks about mass extinctions including the possibility of humans causing one now (including ourselves) and has some drawn images of animals dying to become fossils. It is delivered in a upbeat manner with positive solutions (eg: switching to renewable energy), but the more sensattive students may find these topics distressing.
