Week 1Lesson 1Rock DetectivesIn this dynamic kickoff, students will discover the captivating world of geology and become rock detectives! They'll learn about the essential role of geologists and embark on a journey to explore the diverse types of rocks: igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary. Through interactive activities and discussions, they'll uncover why geology matters and how different rocks shape our planet's landscape.Lesson 2Journey Through BirthstonesDive into the fascinating world of birthstones as students explore the stories and significance behind these precious gems. From January's garnet to December's turquoise, students will uncover the unique characteristics and folklore associated with each birthstone.Lesson 3Legends of Earth's TreasuresUncover the mysteries of famous rocks and gems in history, from the legendary Hope Diamond to the mystical Philosopher's Stone. Through captivating stories and multimedia presentations, students will learn about the origins, myths, and cultural significance of these iconic treasures.Lesson 4Gemstone Excavation AdventureGet ready for a hands-on excavation adventure! Students will become junior geologists as they dig into their gemstone excavation kits to uncover hidden treasures. Through observation and exploration, they will identify different types of gemstones and learn about their unique properties. (parents will need to purchase the excavation kit on amazon prior to the camp starting. A link to the kit will be provided upon enrollment. The kit is $20 on Amazon!)Lesson 5Research and Share: Our Gemstone DiscoveriesPut on your researcher hats as students dive deeper into the world of gemstones. Each student will select one of the gemstones they discovered during the excavation and conduct research to learn more about its geological characteristics, uses, and significance. In a collaborative sharing session, they will present their findings to the group, showcasing their newfound knowledge.
