Class Experience

No prior Geology knowledge is required—each class is a unique learning experience!

While a basic understanding of clay sculpting can be helpful, new students can easily catch on. This weekly live class is perfect for those interested in the intersection of geology and custom creature design, particularly dragons.

Explore Rocks, Minerals, and Gemstones for Dragon Design Inspiration
In each session, we focus on a specific gemstone, rock, crystal, or mineral, analyzing its properties such as color, structure, and texture to inspire your custom dragon or creature designs. Students are encouraged to contribute their ideas and creative input.

Engage with Geology Concepts
Throughout the class, we offer brief discussions on geology, petrology, and mineralogy, helping you understand the foundational elements behind your designs. Plus, we keep things fun with interactive games like Gartic Phone, Drawasaurus, and Kahoot, making learning both engaging and enjoyable.

Basic Sculpting Skills Recommended
While some sculpting knowledge is helpful, it’s not mandatory. The classes are designed to be adaptable, so students can join at any time. Whether you’re a beginner or have prior sculpting experience, this class is tailored to help you grow.

🔻Themes will include the following:
Week of 2/2: Humite
Week of 2/9: Johannsenite
Week of 2/16: Lazurite, old name Azure spar
Week of 2/23: Mesolite

Supplies Recommended:
Your choice of sculpting material (I will be using Polymer Bake Clay) in a variety of colors - check the week’s theme
Note: polymer clay in “Translucent” makes great wings and marbling for those translucent gemstones!
Basic sculpting tools, rolling pin
You may use wire or pins if you would like, but we will not be creating a skeleton together.

Some ideas to use:
Any Glass, Metal, Stone, or Crystal findings that you may want to add to your sculpts. Plastic CANNOT be baked!
Also, Mica Powders make amazing effects for these type of dragons! I use them often :)

I teach a variety of Art classes on Outschool and in person. Many of my classes are Polymer Clay Miniatures, from beginner to intermediate.

All images were sculpted by me, Lori King.

I LOVE to travel and pick up stones and crystals from wherever I go, unique to that part of the globe. I use these findings in class and will occasionally change a theme based on the artifact I brought home. Examples are Lava Rock and black sand from Iceland, Larimar from Punta Cana, etc.
