The class will begin with a discussion about the movie. Although we will surely talk about the octopus and her relationship with the South African filmmaker, the focus of the lesson will be on the place where the movie was filmed - False Bay, near the Cape of Good Hope, located on the southern tip of Africa. It is often called the "Cape of Storms" because the Atlantic Ocean there is spectacularly rough and very stormy with ferocious waves. Historically, this place is very famous for the number of ships that have gone down to the bottom of the ocean because of these storms. In this lesson I will use Google Earth, a Google slides presentation and possibly a short YouTube video. The five themes of geography will be defined and discussed as to how they relate to the setting of the movie. It is preferable that students view the movie prior to attending class. This is a streaming Netflix movie which you can easily view online. You can still take the class if you have not watched the movie, but it will be more meaningful if you have seen it. So, if you're finding this class at the last minute, please join us! If you do not see a section that fits your schedule, please look at my availability and suggest another section. I am available all seven days of the week. Thanks! Please note well that I do require at least two students in order to move forward with this class. If I do not have at least two students, I will cancel about 26 hours in advance. Thank you for understanding.
Learning Goals
Depending on the student, s/he will either review or be introduced to the five themes of Geography.
The five themes of Geography are:
1. Location (Relative & Absolute)
2. Place (What is it like there?)
3. The interaction between humans and their environment
4. Region
5. Movement
As we focus on these themes, a wide range of topics will be discussed, including climate, the Atlantic Ocean, ocean currents, humpback whales, kelp forests and more.

Parental Guidance
This is a beautiful movie that Common Sense Media has deemed appropriate for children 8 years old and older. It might upset very sensitive viewers since the octopus does die at the end of the movie. But, this is just a part of the circle of life. Here is the link to the Common Sense Media review: https://www.commonsensemedia.org/movie-reviews/my-octopus-teacher
