Class Experience

In this class, we'll talk about how to use different features of maps including: distortion, elevation, climate, latitude, and longitude. We'll also identify the Equator, Prime Meridian, and hemispheres, as well as learn how to differentiate physical and political maps.

CLASS STRUCTURE:
In the first class, I'll be giving information, but in a very interactive style. Learners will all be expected to participate. The second class will be similar, but learners will also have short map presentations (which can be paper or online maps). Don't worry, this class won't be dry and boring! I have always loved maps and all they can tell us, which is something I want to convey throughout our lessons.

REQUIREMENTS:
Learners should have basic familiarity with maps before taking this class. If a learner doesn't have experience with using maps, I suggest they take my "Map Skills for Beginners" class first.

NEXT STEPS:
This class was designed to be part of a set of geography classes. Please see my profile for more geography-related classes, including:
-Fun Review of U.S. Regions and Geography (a Kahoot! class)
-Fun Review of U.S. States and Their capitals (a Kahoot! class)
-Map Skills for Beginners
-Regions of the USA Social Studies Class

    Profile
    Teacher expertise and credentials
As of February 18, 2022, I will only be teaching flexible schedule classes.

EXPERIENCE: I graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education in 2010 and have been teaching ever since. I have an Ohio teaching license that includes PreK - Grade 5 plus TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) for K-12. I taught in public schools from 2010 to 2017, which included substitute teaching then teaching reading and math in a primary school. In 2017, I began teaching online full time.

ENGLISH CLASSES: When I teach English, my style is to teach it in a natural way, without forcing my students to do grammar drills or memorize. Instead, they acquire the English language by using it. (I use the Communicative Approach to language teaching.) I use a variety of resources in my lessons so that my students are exposed to English in many contexts. My classes focus on reading and speaking skills.

LITERATURE AND GEOGRAPHY: I love reading, geography, and travel, so I teach courses based on these topics as well. I try to take common interests and help students learn from them. My teaching style is relaxed. I hope all learners will feel comfortable in my classes. In my book discussion groups, I always have one topic of the day and give students free time to discuss the topic, then I have questions ready to further guide discussion.

PERSONAL: To introduce myself personally, I am married and live in Ohio. My hobbies include going to restaurants, walking with friends, running, traveling and reading, and I also love trying new things. My second language is Spanish, and I am currently learning Japanese.

COMMUNICATION: I strive to respond to messages in a timely manner. During the week, I will respond within 24 hours, usually much less. Depending on my schedule, I may not be able to respond directly before class. Please send a message to support@outschool.com if you need help accessing the classroom.
