Geography Camp! - Country Studies - Twice-A-Week
What's included
2 live meetings
1 hrs 50 mins in-class hours per weekClass Experience
This is an ongoing camp which meets on Tuesdays & Thursdays. During every lesson, we will study about the physical and human geography of one country, with an emphasis on the physical geography. During each camp meeting, we will label maps of the subject country and its continent. We will discuss important topics as we do so. Geography is an extremely broad subject which overlaps with many other subjects such as Earth Science, Government, Economics, History, Current Events, etc.. Depending on the country we may touch on just some or all of these subjects. I will focus on what is geographically most significant about the individual countries. Topics covered will include a broad overview of the physical and human geography of the country as well as a more focused view on what is geographically significant about that particular country. Depending on the country we may focus on any one or more of the following topics: climate, food, history, mountains, rivers, language, religion, ethnic groups, economics, government, current events, commerce, regions, ocean currents and much more. Most of the camp meetings will include map work, discussions, slides, short videos, short virtual reality field trips and some lecturing. I tend to be quite relaxed and follow the students' interests as much as possible. If time permits, I try to end all classes with a short game/quiz to assess learning. It is expected that the students know their compass directions. N, E, S, W! Supply List
Pencil Eraser Set of colored pencils Virtual Reality Headset (OPTIONAL!) If you have one, bring it to class. Don't buy one, unless you have other uses for it besides this camp! They're expensive! You can experience the virtual reality field trips without the headsets. Students will need access to a printer so they may print out the PDF maps I send them. These maps should be printed out before camp meetings so that they may be used during camp. Sometimes we might use more than one map.... it all depends on the country.
External Resources
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Sources
Google Earth
Students are expected to print out the appropriate maps and map locations for each of the countries. I will post the pdf file links to the class prior to each meeting.
I will often include virtual reality field trips in our meetings. Virtual reality headsets are absolutely not necessary, but if you are lucky enough to have one of these cool headsets, please bring it to camp.
