This geo bee (#8) offers a fast-moving introduction/review of sub-Saharan Africa's dramatic land features plus details illustrating life in these countries, followed by a game style Kahoot. Middle School Level & Trivia Fun. Small classes.

Class experience

US Grade 5 - 8
Students will demonstrate mastery of up to 26  concepts  by practicing for meaning, reviewing, completing a Kahoot game quiz and then reviewing errors.  These concepts are embedded in middle school geography curricula.  Students will apply vocabulary, map reading, interpret statistics and use new learning to make sense of a question.

Teacher qualifications:  I have taught Social Studies ( World Geography, which includes Africa) for over 20 years.  I have been fortunate to teach the geography of Africa to very diverse students groups, often.  My lessons benefit from my participation in many enriching courses that support teaching this material, such as ethnic and cultural difference, historical marginalization, evaluating historic sources for point of view, resource distribution, economics of diverse resources, etc.  My diverse classes have had lots of fun and engagement with Kahoot Challenges and other techniques for bringing fun to the classroom while building student skills.  Highlights of Education:  B.A. History, Master's Degree Public Policy, 30 credits beyond Master's including Education, Geography, History and English Language Arts. Homework Offered
Optional. Students are encouraged to review the provided handouts before class. Student can also practice location with the online interactive games cited on the welcome letter. This will deepen student learning and also give a competitive edge in the Kahoot challenge.

Assessments Offered
The Kahoot game quiz results will show student mastery of geography concepts and terms. Follow up discussion from the final class review will supplement those results. The completed blank handout of terms and ideas, plus completed map practice handout & the certificate of achievement can serve as artifacts for a student portfolio.

In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
We will use the online game site ‘Kahoot’ to offer our geography bee challenge (designed for this particular class) through screen share. Learners do NOT set up their own account. Students may access the answer device, with a nickname or symbol. 

The Owl & Mouse map site link is provided in our opening letter as a practice resource, to be used at home, with parent permission.  The site does NOT request users to set up an account or sign in. The site is designed to serve elementary level children. It states that:
     “The privacy and security of visitors our website is very  important to Owl and Mouse Educational Software.  Owl and Mouse collects no information from visitors and we do not use ‘cookies’.”

This class draws on standard geographical sources such as the Encylopedia Britannica, World Atlas and data from the CIA World Factbook.
Optional:  learners may practice map games on Africa through the Owl & Mouse site, with parent permission.  This site is designed for elementary school children, and its privacy statement says they do not collect information.  http://www.yourchildlearns.com/mappuzzle/africa-puzzle.html
