Class Experience

Come explore the world of geography with animals. Animals live in almost every corner of the globe. Animals have had significant influences upon the people they share the world with. Students will explore continents, regions, and countries of the world while looking at the animals that live there and their influences upon the people there.

Geography is the study of earth and its people. A geographer tries to understand the world and the things that are in it, how they started and how they have changed. We will do all of this, but by letting animals lead the way.

Some of the topics we will explore:

Explore animals as pets in different parts of the world.
How people use animals for work and food.
How human choices have hurt animal populations.
How and why some animals have migrated, thrived, or died out in certain areas.
Adaptations animals have made to survive in their homes.

If there are particular animals students would like to study, the I will try to accommodate as many as I can into the lesson. Students will be able to request animals in the classroom chat each week.

We will spend about 2 classes on each continent. We will look at major land forms of each continent. We will discuss the weather including average rain fall. Students will make predictions about what kinds of adaptations animals would need to survive in those conditions. Students will also predict how humans may use those animals in daily life because of the terrain and climate. Each week we will cover many animals that have had a great influence on the people that live there.

Students will be given time in class to share what they know about the animals and continents that we are studying. I love when students are able to speak from their own knowledge or experience and share it with the class. This class will not be strictly lecture, they will be required to contribute to the learning process through discussion.

Students will be given *optional* assignments each week to do research on their own about each region. Students will need to be able to use the internet to look up answers to questions. Students will be given chances to do a variety of exploration in each region that we study. Some weeks they may be asked to look up countries we didn't study on a particular continent. Another week they may asked to research an animal that is unique to a country or continent. Students will have the chance to share their discoveries in class in the form of writing or visual presentation if they so wish to do so.

Fill in the blank class note pages will also be available to print out if students would like to take notes during class.

Learning differences don’t bother me. Why? Because I’ve taught in a school for them and my own family deals with ADHD, dyslexia, and dysgraphia. I chose to not go back into the classroom because of my own children needing a different approach. (Please scroll down to read my class policies at the bottom)

I believe in hands-on learning and I'm big on student involvement in classes. Have you ever noticed how much easier it is to remember something you've actually done and discussed versus read about? When we touch, play, ask, and do, we remember so much better. You'll never get a straight lecture class from me. I strongly encourage students to ask questions and to participate. I also understand that sometimes kids need a bit more time to speak and formulate ideas. Patience and encouragement are virtues that you will see exercised in my classes.

When I'm not teaching on Outschool or homeschooling my children, I teach English to refugees or processing immigration paperwork. I have also worked at international boarding schools with middle and high schoolers. I absolutely love working with people from every walk of life and have spent hours listening to my students tell me their stories. In my former brick and mortar classrooms, I taught Latin and science in a Classical model school. I also taught English and science in a school for learning differences.

In addition to the humans in my family, I also have a dog, two guinea pigs, a gerbil, a hedgehog, four chickens, and a hamster at the moment! I grew up with house rabbits who would watch tv with us. I love being outside, I love reading, and I love creating.

Policies as of August 8, 2020:
    ---
    * If Zoom kicks out the teacher, please wait up to 5 minutes. I will post if I am able to continue class or have to reschedule in the classroom during that time.

    * If Zoom kicks out the whole class, again, please wait up to 5 minutes while trying to re-enter. If you are unable to get back in, please message me. I will work with you to transfer you to another section.

    * You must request a class recording to receive it.

    * Effective immediately, requests for transfer will only be accepted with a minimum of 24 hours' notice. If you request a transfer with less than 24 hours' notice, you will receive the class recording. This move is necessary because, if you transfer without enough time to fill the spot you are transferring from, you are getting two spots in the class but only paying for one.
