Do you want to start geocaching and be a part of the world's largest scavenger hunt? In this 4-week flexible schedule class, students will learn all about this fun hobby, and start finding and creating their first geocaches. It is a great course to also take alongside a geocaching badge for Scouting. **** THIS IS A FLEX CLASS AND THERE ARE NO LIVE MEETINGS. **** **** OPTIONAL 4 WEEKS MEMBERSHIP TO WEEKLY TEEN GEOCACHING SOCIAL CLUB FOR $1 (see below) **** On starting the course, students...
Students will learn what geocaching is, and understand the principles of GPS and coordinates. They will discover new facts about their local area as they find new geocaches, and will learn critical thinking and observation skills when searching for them. They will learn how to write a description for their geocache, and also some environmental responsibility through the rules of hiding a geocache.
I'm a passionate geocacher and have been geocaching for 8+ years. I have previously led Girlguiding and Scout groups, and have taught children and teens to geocache in the past. I love all the geography, local history, geology and science, technology, language and problem-solving skills (and more) you can pick up from geocaching, as well as all the time spent outside in nature you can get while hunting for hidden treasure!
Each week students will be expected to find and locate 3-5 geocaches in their local area and share their finds with the rest of the class. Expect this to take 1-2 hours, depending on how widely spread the geocaches are located. There may also be some travel required, and you may want to set aside a whole morning or afternoon for this, depending on your family's schedule - it is quite addictive. Students will need to also watch the week's video and complete the activities for that week, which may take an additional 1-2 hours, especially when they are in Weeks 3 & 4 where there is more creative work to do when putting together their first geocache.
Students will need a GPS-enabled device/navigator or smartphone with the Geocaching app on it. They will need to access the Geocaching website. When out geocaching, they will need appropriate clothing for the time of year, good walking shoes, a notebook, pen, device to take photos and/or videos on and hand sanitizer. A list of container suggestions and materials will be given to students so that they can create their first geocaches, which you will be able to choose from. If the student wishes to make any swag items, again, a list of suggestions will be provided with free and very low-cost ideas to make some simple swag items.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
- Geocaching app
No live meetings, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
Please note that students will need to have a smartphone or GPS-enabled device, download the Geocaching app and it is also recommended that an adult accompanies younger students on any geocaching adventures. When seeking permission to hide their geocache, again, parental supervision is recommended.
