US Grade 5 - 8
Beginner Level
This 50-minute class will teach topics such as: Hereditary Traits What is a Cell Who is Gregor Mendel What is a Double Helix What are the components of DNA How do you extract DNA Students will learn through: PPT Google Slides diagrams questions 2-3 minute YouTube videos, optional online quiz thought-provoking discussions. I enjoy teaching this subject matter using hands-on methods. Therefore we do several models throughout this class. Due to these classes involving labs, I do need ALL students to have their video cameras turned on. I can assist them by viewing what they are doing. I also would like a minimum of chatroom conversations. My Classroom rules are as follows: Listen to the Teacher. No talking while Teacher Pat speaks. If you want to ask or answer a question; please raise your hand. Speak when your name is called. I do prefer video cameras without background during class time. Limit chat room discussions. Enjoy learning Genetics! Read the Syllabus for specific objectives for each lesson.
Learning Goals
The goal is for the students to familiarize themselves with the origin of Genetics.
Students will learn the vocabulary used in the study of Genetics.
Syllabus
4 Lessons
over 4 WeeksLesson 1:
Introduction to Genetics
What are the parts of a cell? Students will create a model of the cell using three types of colored paper and other craft items.
-What is Genetics?
-Why is it important to us?
-What is a gene?

Lesson 2:
Day 2 Vocab and LAB TIME!
Introduce Genetic Vocabulary with a question-and-answer session. Then proceed to build DNA using different materials that are readily available.
Review Vocabulary and Color the Double Helix Coloring Worksheet.
50 mins online live lesson
Lesson 3:
Day 3 Punnett Squares
Who's Gregor Mendel and Simple Punnett Squares
Biography of Gregor Mendel
-How to figure out a simple Punnett Square through modeling on the whiteboard.
50 mins online live lesson
Lesson 4:
Day 4 LAB TIME!
Demonstrate how to extract DNA from strawberries with household items.
If you would like to follow along with this lab, you will need materials.

Parental Guidance
Parents need to download the documents for this class. (See below under Initial Materials)
If parents want their child to follow along with the instructor as she does the labs, materials will need to be collected before that session. No PG is needed during the session.
We will use alcohol to precipitate DNA. Eye protection may be necessary.
Supply List
Welcome! I'm excited that you joined this class. Would you please introduce yourself to me and the other learners? Share any background or questions you have in this topic area. Gather your materials for each lesson we meet. Day 1 Materials needed: 3 different colored paper, glue stick, marker, and scissors Let's create a cell. Use three different color papers; one for each part of the cell. Cut out the template with scissors, glue it together, and label the parts of the cell. Then place the toothpicks that represent DNA inside the nucleus. Day 2 Materials needed: toothpicks and different colored mini-marshmallows (assorted color gumdrops, or four different colored Playdoh) We are going to build DNA. Your child can do this along with the teacher if they want. Day 3 Materials: Whiteboard or paper; writing tool Students will learn to do a Punnett square. They will need their worksheet to read the genetic problem, they will be solving. Day 4 Demonstrate how to extract DNA from strawberries with household items. If you would like to follow along with this lab, you will need the following materials: PUT THE ALCOHOL IN THE FRIDGE THE NIGHT BEFORE. Materials: 3 large frozen or fresh strawberries, sandwich size zip lock bag, salt, Clear Dawn or 7th Generation dishwashing liquid seem to work the best, COLD 70% -90% isopropyl alcohol, coffee filters or cheesecloth, a small funnel or strainer (preferred), a spoon, 2 clear cups, jars or glasses, and a toothpick. Measuring spoons and cups will be needed to measure ingredients. I will demonstrate strawberry DNA extraction. You are welcome to follow along if you have all the supplies.
