In this fun hands-on Science class we are going to learn the basics of Genetics by building a DNA model with gumdrops, solve basic Punnett Squares, and extract DNA from strawberries from household materials.

Class experience

US Grade 5 - 8
Beginner Level
The goal is for the student to familiarize themselves with the origin of Genetics and the vocabulary used in the study of Genetics.
I've taught Genetics for several years in my Biology and Forensics class. I would enjoy teaching your child about why it's important to learn about genetics.
Homework Offered

Labs are OPTIONAL. However, I highly recommend gathering the materials to do the hands-on part with me. It makes it more engaging and fun. Day 1 Materials needed: 3 different color paper, glue stick, marker and scissors Let's create a cell. Use three different color papers; one for each part of the cell. Cut out the template with scissors, glue together, and label the parts of the cell. Then place the toothpicks that represent DNA inside the nucleus. Day 2 Materials needed: toothpicks and different colored mini-marshmallows (assorted color gumdrops, or four different colored Playdoh) We are going to build DNA. Your child can do this along with the teacher if they want. Day 3 Materials: Whiteboard or paper; writing tool Students will learn to do a Punnett square. They will need their worksheet to read the genetic problem, they will be solving. Day 4 Demonstrate how to extract DNA from strawberries with household items. If you would like to follow along with this lab, you will need the following materials: PUT THE ALCOHOL IN THE FRIDGE THE NIGHT BEFORE. Materials: 3 large frozen or fresh strawberries, sandwich size ziplock bag, salt, Clear Dawn or 7th Generation dishwashing liquid seem to work the best, COLD 70% -90% isopropyl alcohol, coffee filters or cheescloth, a small funnel or strainer (preferred), a spoon, 2 clear cups, jars or glasses, and a toothpick. Measuring spoons and cups will be needed to measure ingredients. I will demonstrate strawberry DNA extraction. You are welcomed to follow along if you have all the supplies.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Parents need to download the documents for this class. (See below under Initial Materials)
If parents want their child to follow along with the instructor as she does the labs, materials will need to collect prior to that session. No PG needed during the session. However, parents may have the student review the recording to review the vocabulary used in that session.
