Class experience
US Grade 5 - 8
Beginner Level
Due to these classes involving labs, I do need ALL students to have their video cameras turned on. I can assist them by viewing what they are doing. I also would like a minimum of chatroom conversations. Students will learn through diagrams, questions, 2-3 minute Youtube videos, optional online quiz, and thought-provoking discussions we will learn: My Classroom rules: Listen to the Teacher. No talking while Teacher Pat speaks. If you want to ask or answer a question; please raise your...
The goal is for the student to familiarize themselves with the origin of Genetics and the vocabulary used in the study of Genetics.
I've taught Genetics for several years in my Biology and Forensics class. I would enjoy teaching your child about why it's important to learn about genetics.

Day 1 Materials needed: 3 different color paper, glue stick, marker and scissors Let's create a cell. Use three different color papers; one for each part of the cell. Cut out the template with scissors, glue together, and label the parts of the cell. Then place the toothpicks that represent DNA inside the nucleus. Day 2 Materials needed: toothpicks and different colored mini-marshmallows (assorted color gumdrops, or four different colored Playdoh) We are going to build DNA. Your child can do this along with the teacher if they want. Day 3 Materials: Whiteboard or paper; writing tool Students will learn to do a Punnett square. They will need their worksheet to read the genetic problem, they will be solving. Day 4 Demonstrate how to extract DNA from strawberries with household items. Measuring spoons and cups will be needed to measure ingredients. I will demonstrate strawberry DNA extraction. You are welcomed to follow along if you have all the supplies.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Parents need to download the documents for this class. No PG needed during the session. However, parents may have the student review the recording to review the vocabulary used in that session.
