Beginner Level
Introduce your learner to the exciting world of Artificial Intelligence in this beginner-friendly class that requires no previous coding or computer science knowledge! Over four engaging days, students will discover what AI truly is, explore its history, and learn about its practical applications in our daily lives. They'll gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge tools like ChatGPT and AI image generators, developing valuable prompt engineering skills that transform them into confident AI power users. The class includes interactive discussions about AI careers, foundations of coding skills, and thoughtful exploration of both the potential and limitations of this revolutionary technology. This comprehensive course features multiple teen-focused projects, including creating AI-generated images, conducting AI-assisted research, and practicing effective prompt engineering techniques for school and personal interests. Each day builds upon the previous learning, covering essential topics from "What is Intelligence?" to practical applications of Large Language Models for academic work and creative projects. With web-based tools accessible from any modern browser, teens only need a computer with a keyboard to participate. Throughout the course, students are encouraged to share their questions and projects, fostering a collaborative environment where they can learn from both the instructor and each other while developing skills that will serve them well in our increasingly AI-integrated world and future career opportunities. Course Highlights - Introduction to AI Fundamentals - Learn what artificial intelligence actually is and how it's already being used in our world - Hands-on Experience with ChatGPT - Develop prompt engineering skills with one of the most popular AI chatbots - Create AI-Generated Images - Use ChatGPT to design and produce unique digital images and artwork. - Explore Large Language Models - Understand how LLMs work, their capabilities, and limitations - Practical AI Applications - Discover ways to use AI tools for school research and creative projects - Career Exploration - Learn about exciting job opportunities in the growing field of artificial intelligence - Coding Skills Foundation - Begin developing technical knowledge through interactive group activities - Collaborative Learning Environment - Share projects, receive feedback, and learn from peers - No Prior Experience Needed - Designed specifically for teens with no coding or computer science background - Real-World Technology Skills - Gain experience with tools and techniques that are increasingly valuable in education and future careers Technology Requirements Students should have access to a laptop or desktop computer with a full keyboard. All applications used for this class are web based and will work with any modern browser such as Edge, Chrome, Safari, or Firefox. Parental Guidance Artificial intelligence, machine learning, and specifically generative AI technologies that will be used for parts of this course can produce a variety of outputs. Sometimes these outputs may be inappropriate, offensive, or biased in a variety of ways. This is possible while learners are using these technologies during class and also outside of class. There will be a class dedicated to how these issues occur with AI and machine learning projects. Then what steps can be taken to reduce the possibility this happens
Learning Goals
Students will start learning the foundations of this exciting field and more importantly how they can start utilizing these technologies in the future.
Students will be able to define Artificial Intelligence in simple terms and identify examples in everyday technology. They will also demonstrate the ability to initiate conversations with ChatGPT and obtain basic information through simple prompts.
Syllabus
4 Lessons
over 1 WeekLesson 1:
What is AI & First Chat
We'll kick things off by demystifying Artificial Intelligence, exploring what it means and identifying AI technologies already present in our daily lives. You'll then get your first hands-on experience interacting with ChatGPT, learning the absolute basics of asking questions and getting text-based responses from this versatile AI tool.
60 mins online live lesson
Lesson 2:
Prompt Engineering
We will explore ChatGPT's powerful image generation feature, focusing on how to write effective prompts to create visuals directly within the chat interface. You'll practice describing desired images with specific details, experimenting with different artistic styles (e.g., "oil painting," "photorealistic," "pixel art"), and iterating on your prompts to refine the AI-generated pictures.
60 mins online live lesson
Lesson 3:
Advanced Prompting for Practical Tasks
Dive deeper into prompt engineering techniques using ChatGPT for practical school and personal text-based tasks. We'll practice strategies such as defining the AI's role (e.g., "Act as a study partner"), providing clear context, requesting specific output formats (like summaries or code explanations), and guiding the AI to refine its answers for better results in research, writing, and problem-solving.
60 mins online live lesson
Lesson 4:
AI Careers & Your Future
Description: Explore the diverse and rapidly growing career opportunities within the field of artificial intelligence, emphasizing roles where strong human-AI communication and prompt engineering skills are valuable. We will wrap up by discussing the real-world applications of the ChatGPT skills you've practiced and how they can benefit you in future studies and potential careers.

Learners will utilize Bing Chat or the ChatGPT interface to learn more about prompt engineering and large language models. Students will then learn more about image generation using the Crayon AI Image Generator. An Open AI account is required for the use of ChatGPT and it is required that adults help their learner register. Students are required to be at 13 years old to register for this class.
Supply List
Students can use any laptop or desktop computer with a modern browser. It is recommended to update the browser (Chrome, Safari, Bing, Firefox, etc.) before the first class. Bing chat does not require an account registration. An Open AI account is required for the use of ChatGPT, and it is required that adults help their learner register.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree from Mount St. Mary's University
Over 5,000 students from nearly 130 countries across a variety of platforms have started coding in one of my classes. I offer classes covering the foundations of Python and AI. I am an Outschool Ace Educator and personally teach every class. Before teaching, I worked as a software developer for nearly 10 years. I've worked for organizations including Apple, Dell, and Best Buy. I believe the best way to learn is by doing and all my classes are based around hands-on projects that progressively build in difficulty. I'm a graduate of Mount St. Mary's University in Emmitsburg, Maryland. I can't wait to meet your learner in the class and get started soon.
