WELCOME to all LGBTQ+ Students and Allies of the LGBTQ Community! In this "class" you're actually a member of a club, a nationwide network! Looking for a safe place? Looking for new friends who have similar experiences? Wanting to learn more about gender, sexuality, and the LGBTQ community? We're here for you! Come join us. This ongoing club is officially registered with the national GSA Network and is a Social, Educational, and Support GSA Club for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender,...
I have taught LGBTQ Studies, History, and Culture in brick and mortar schools as well as on online school for many years. I have also been an advisor to a GSA group before too. I have seen first hand how this club helps LGBTQ and Straight students form bonds, transform shy people to more confident people, and create an accepting, good understanding, and loving climate with one another while championing a common cause: education and advocacy. I have also received training as a GSA Advisor from the national GSA Network. I am active in the Human Rights Campaign and teach an LGBTQ course here on Outschool. I am also a member of the LGBTQ Community myself. As a Social Studies teacher for a few decades, I realize just how important it is to not only talk about LGBTQ issues but also study, interpret, and understand them. I have a bachelor's in Social Sciences, a Masters in Education with Curriculum Development, and a Doctorate in Philosophy.
1. Actively participate in the weekly live video meeting. I have set the meeting time on Monday's for 60 minutes and on Thursdays for 90 minutes; however, please note that depending upon how many students are in the live meeting and what our discussion is about a live meeting might be a minimum of 30 minutes and a maximum of 90 minutes. Our weeks are Thursday to Wednesday. 2. We will play a game called "Kahoot" the following Thursday which is a fun review of the prior week's lesson/discussion. Members do not need a Kahoot account to play the game, they can just log on to Kahoot.it. A member is not required to participate, they may just watch it if they wish. Participation is highly encouraged on the weekly discussion thread post in the classroom and our weekly live video meetings. A.) This Club's Rules: 1. Please do not change your name on Zoom. You must use the same name that is on your Outschool account. This is for Zoom safety reasons and Outschool policy. If the name on your Zoom does not match the name on your Outschool learner profile I will not be able to let you into the live meeting and you will remain in the Zoom "Waiting Room" per Outschool policy. You will be allowed to change your name on Zoom to your preferred name as well as add your pronouns in parenthesis if you desire after I have admitted you into the live meeting and see you with your camera on. Tip: You can change your name and add pronouns in your Learner Profile on Outschool and it will show up on Zoom. 2. Please be kind and respectful of each other in live meetings and on classroom postings. We are a social group, but we are also a support and educational group. Keep social time conversations upbeat, positive, and be supportive of one another as much as possible. 3. Please keep your camera ON unless you were pre-approved by Outschool Support to keep your camera off. I will have a notification from Outschool if you are approved to keep your camera off. You can also just quickly turn your camera on for a moment so that I can confirm you're a student and turn your camera back off. This is part of Outshool's policy. Please do not use the "background" Zoom feature. This is for Zoom safety reasons. 4. You may socialize before we start the meeting, but when I come on live video, please stop, mute your microphone, and prepare to have a great meeting! 5. Please mute your microphone when your student president, a fellow classmate, or I am speaking. This is just polite and respectful, & stops any background noise that might occur during the meeting. The same goes for watching videos in live meetings. 6. During the lesson in the live meetings, please do not speak unless you are called upon by the student president or myself. If it is a general question or statement that either of us gives to the entire class and you wish to answer or speak, please just raise your hand. This helps to cut down on everyone talking over everyone else. 7. Yes, there will be a point of social time when you can leave your microphone on and just talk with each other towards the end of the meeting in breakout rooms (where I go back and forth every minute). Please wait until this is announced by either the student president or the teacher. 8. Parents, please remember that you are not allowed to be on camera or speak during live meetings per Outschool's policies. Thank you. 9. This is a safe space for all students where we have positive conversations, give support to one another, and have fun socializing about LGBTQ+ matters and other positive life events. Members have the ability to click on the "Help" button located in each breakout room during the social time for immediate teacher assistance for any reason if I am not in their breakout room at the moment. These rules are designed to promote internet/Zoom safety, keep the club meeting a little more organized, be respectful of others, be supportive, have fun, and abide by Outschool rules and policies. I very much appreciate your understanding, care, and following these rules for every meeting we have. B.) Outschool Student Code of Conduct: 1. Join the class on time and be ready to learn. 2. Dress in a manner appropriate for the class to help create a safe and comfortable environment for all learners and the teacher. Always show up for class fully clothed (shirts required). 2, Treat the teacher and your classmates with respect. 3. Take responsibility for making each class a great learning experience for yourself and your classmates: participate, stay on topic, and avoid distractions. 4. Contribute to a class environment in a way that is safe and welcoming for learners and teachers from all backgrounds, beliefs, and locations. 5. Keep your personal information private and don't ask others to share personal information (e.g., email address, mailing address, phone number, gamer tags, etc.). While our open community is our greatest source of strength, it also brings challenges. It is important to us that Outschool is a safe space for our users. Our members should treat each other without bias or prejudice across all pillars of diversity including, but not limited to, race, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, religion, and gender identity. Here are some guidelines that we ask our members to observe. Outschool members who do not meet these guidelines will be removed from the site. C.) The National GSA Network Guidelines: Link: https://www.glsen.org/sites/default/files/2020-04/guideline%20for%20discussions.pdf
3 hours per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Note on the Weekly Club Cost: The $27 per week you pay for this GSA Club comes to $13.50 per live meeting (one hour). We meet for one hour on Mondays, and then one and a half hours on Thursdays, plus the weekly classroom chat thread that I post and comment on throughout the week, planning, and responding to private messages. Outschool takes their 30% fee for running the platform. I do not charge for the extra 30 minutes on Thursdays, that is a freebie (SMILE).* High School students will need to have a certain level of maturity and a very open mind as well as a desire to learn in this class. We discuss gender, sexual expression, transgender, sexology, gays, lesbians, bisexuals, pansexuals, intersexual, questioning, queer, ace (asexual), biromantic, gay marriage, drag queens, drag kings, bullying, nonbinary, criminal justice, juvenile justice, transexuals, the equal rights movement, HIV/AIDS, racial issues, activism, historical riots, suicide prevention, adult language, and other important topics related to the LGBTQ+ community. Some videos or images may contain photos such as homosexual artworks, particularly from past centuries as we study history, protests, riots, and other materials such as they relate to the LGBTQ history and community. We also cut up and tease one another in a fun way a lot. There is mature content at times. After our main meeting, lessons, and discussions, I use the Zoom breakout rooms for a part of the "social time" of the club. The class is evenly split up into two or three separate breakout rooms on Zoom. This helps students to socialize better and more easily. I constantly switch through each breakout room every one to two minutes to monitor what is being discussed and that Outschool and the club rules are being followed. Students do have the ability to click on the "Help" button located in each breakout room for immediate teacher assistance for any reason if I am not in their breakout room at the moment. At the end of the breakout room social time all students are put back into the main room for more social time. Please note the when breakout rooms are used there will not be a recording available to be seen or reviewed since Zoom does not record breakout room sessions. Unfortunately, the teacher has no control over this. All students are warmly welcome to take this class and participate regardless of gender (or nongender) sexual orientation, or sexual identity as long as there is mutual respect for one another. Any hate speech will not be tolerated as this is a safe space for all. I am always open to comments, suggestions, and making modifications in all of my classes during the course of the class. Have a conversation with your student and then reach out to me through private direct messaging on Outschool and we can have a great conversation about your comments, concerns, and suggestions to meet and fulfill the needs of your student. **Special Note: If a student misses 3 consecutive live meetings the Outschool platform unrolls them. There isn't anything the teacher can do to stop the process. If this happens, you will need to enroll your student again as a new student if another new student hasn't taken the spot. More information about GSA can be found using this link: https://gsanetwork.org/ Refund Policy: The pricing is weekly, charged every Sunday for the following week. All Ongoing classes have a standard refund policy: "Cancel subscription at any point, no refund for past subscriptions. Payments can be refunded within 24 hours of purchase." To unsubscribe and not be charged any further, you must do it before the following Sunday. If a student misses 3 consecutive live meetings in a row, the Outschool system automatically withdraws them from the class. Unfortunately, I am unable to guarantee their sport if this happens. The teacher has no control over this subscription policy. Transfers are not available. Our weeks are Thursday to Wednesday. *Note: If there are no students after the first 10 minutes of any live meeting the meeting for that day will be canceled and a recording will not be available. There are no refunds for any missed live meetings. From time to time live meetings might be cut short for different reasons, there is no refund available for any shortened meetings. Please Note: This class requires a minimum of TEN students in order to begin and continue through the end date of the ongoing subscription. If there are not 10 teens enrolled in the club at any time throughout this weekly ongoing class it will have to be ended earlier than the final meeting date and you will not be charged any further.
