Geeking Out with Greek Mythology!

In this 8 week class, we'd be exploring and understanding the Hero's Journey, and how Ancient Greek Mythology helped us establish modern storytelling and the characterization Greek Gods and the heroes paralleled how we form characters today

Homework
1 hour per week. Reading from a pdf Writing and/or creating a way to share how they made comparisons with modern heroes to the ancient heroes.

Class Experience

Week 1: Introduce the Greek Gods and the Ancient Greek World Background Context: Discussions and reading texts, some clips for understanding and visualization.

Week 2: Introduce the literary concept: Hero's Journey: Discussions and reading texts, some clips for understanding and visualization. 

Week 3: Perseus: Readings and Character Analysis: Discussions and reading texts, some clips for understanding and visualization.

Week 4: Hercules: Readings and Character Analysis: Discussions and reading texts, some clips for understanding and visualization.

Week 5: The Trojan War: Readings and Character Analysis: Discussions and reading texts, some clips for understanding and visualization.

Week 6: The Trojan War: Readings and Character Analysis: Discussions and reading texts, some clips for understanding and visualization.

Week 7: Parts of The Odyssey: Readings and Character Analysis: Discussions and reading texts, some clips for understanding and visualization.

Week 8: Final Project: Compare a Modern Hero's Journey to an Ancient Greek Hero: Zoom Presentation and/or add in creative outlets (essay or poem, or song, or drawing, etc.)... share how they found their comparisons. Students can make a personal experience of their hero's journey.

Learning Goals

Students will be able to identify the literary steps of a hero's journey.
Students will be able to identify characterization of heroes and the Greek Gods.
Students will make comparisons  of modern literary works and literary media to the Ancient Greek Mythology stories.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Fighting/action/adventure type scenes in Greek Mythology. Art may show human anatomy.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
