Do you long to gather around a campfire and tell spooky stories? Maybe you have fond memories of camping out under the stars hearing about the adventures of folks like John Henry, Paul Bunyan, and Thunder Rose. Whatever your reason for joining me around the campfire, this class will serve as a place to kindle your story-telling spirit! Class will always begin with the lighting of a virtual campfire and a story from the teacher. Then we will explore the elements of storytelling and, once folks have had a chance to do a little bit of thinking, students may tell their own stories. It is important to note that this class is for ages 13+ and stories will be told at that level of maturity. Example class covenant: -We welcome and affirm learners of all abilities and all walks of life. -We understand that our differences in opinion and learning style can lead to more dynamic learning. -We will not tolerate hate speech, bullying, and other negative behavior toward each other. -We will follow the classroom guidelines for Outschool that are there to keep us safe and geared toward learning. -We will manage risk so that our class can be fun, safe, and fascinating!
Learning Goals
Although this is a mostly social class, students will have a chance to learn story formation and explore their own voice and creativity in the context of freeform storytelling
Other Details
Parental Guidance
The class covenant includes risk management for ourselves and others. Along these lines, the teacher reserves "veto power" on a story that could get too spooky for the audience. Guidance for students will be to keep their self-written stories at a PG-13 rating, and all stories told by the teacher are kept at a similar level. Stories will not all be scary, but students will be encouraged to explore all forms of campfire storytelling
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Sources
As a camp director for 15 years and volunteer leader after that, I know my way around a campfire! We will use sources gathered through my experiences as a camp director including Travis Allison, Ultimate Camp Resource, Scott Arizala, and organizational publications from 4-H, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Camp Quality.
Teacher expertise and credentials
I was a camp director for 15 years, which means I've led over 1,000 campfires for teens! I am well-versed in redirection when a story goes awry, but long before that I have years of experience nudging stories in a wonderful direction that amplifies, not changes, the intention of the storyteller. I love creating safe space wherein our young people can stretch their imaginations!
I hold a BA in Performing and Visual Arts with a focus in Early British Drama and Shakespeare and have won several awards for my work in this field.
