US Grade 5 - 8
A great time for learners to gather together in a virtual meeting to discuss gardening and check things off your gardening to do list. Each meeting we will have a different topic to focus our time together. Learners are encouraged to have their cameras and microphones on and speak freely, yet respectfully, throughout the meeting. Each meeting will start off with introductions as necessary, then the teacher will act as moderator while learners chat amongst themselves. Occasionally the teacher will lead activities based on current garden activity. Learners do not need to have prior gardening knowledge or experience. We will work through the entire year together, sharing our knowledge. Learners are encouraged to share videos and pictures of their gardens, harvests, recipes and dishes they’ve prepared with items from their garden. A reminder of what to bring to the meeting will be posted in the classroom one week prior. Over the gardening season, class meets weekly. In the off season, class meets less frequently. You are welcome to drop in to any meeting according to your interests, or join us for all meetings! Parental Guidance
Learners should have at minimum, a small space where they can grow their own garden. This may be a community garden, some pots on the balcony or even just a windowsill. Some of the activities involve soil and may be messy, depending on your learner. Time spent gardening should average about 1hr per week. At first, less time is needed, and at peak, more time is needed. The size of the garden and equipment used also influences the amount of time dedicated to gardening.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Kristin. I was a licensed Teacher in Oregon prior to having children (ages 8-12) and focusing on their education. I earned a Masters of Arts in Teaching degree from Western Oregon University in Middle and Secondary Education for Science and Health.
Most my classes focus in health and science, particularly the Middle School level, as I’ve found I enjoy that age group the best. I do have many interests and hobbies, so some classes venture outside the core academic realm and into hobby land. We live in southern Colorado on a small ranch where we enjoy animals, gardening, and self sufficiency in a very challenging climate.
My goal is to instill a desire to learn with lessons that are meaningful and enjoyable. I remember sitting in a desk in front of a whiteboard, bored out of my mind, thinking, “There is no way I will EVER need to know this!” Yet, when I became an adult, I quickly realized, that yes, I did need to know most of the information I was taught. I have needed to go back and relearn much of what I previously ignored as useless information. When you can apply information to your life it becomes meaningful. I like lessons to focus on application: how can I use this knowledge in MY life; why do I need to know this? I am so excited to meet your child and help them apply the knowledge they're acquiring to their life!
