Class Experience

🎙️In this 12-week course, students will learn how to produce music using GarageBand. This includes recording, beat making, and midi recording. The final project will be a recorded original song or cover of their choice.

🍎💻Apple's GarageBand is an amazing free tool (for Mac users) that all modern musicians should learn.

The end goal is to have a professionally produced track at the end of the course. Here's how I will break it down. Each class, besides the first, will be the lessons listed below and demonstrate/give feedback on some of the work submitted. Your project might not be picked every week but I will let you know when it is. Even though it might be scary to show what you are working on this is a huge learning opportunity for everyone in the class!

⭐ Week 1 - An Overview/ Recording Audio⭐
🎤 This will be where we get familiar with Garagebands layout. Once that is established we will learn how to make a track and record into it.

⭐ Weeks 2-3 - Recording/Programming MIDI⭐
🎹Students will learn all the capabilities of working with midi instruments. They will learn how to navigate through GarageBand's library to find different sounds to work with. We will then learn how to record these sounds by performing on a MIDI keyboard as well as programming them into the on-screen piano-roll editor.

⭐ Weeks 4 - Beat Making ⭐
🥁 As a continuation of learning MIDI I will show them how to make beats from percussive and melodic instruments that are built into GarageBand. This is how a lot of new songs start.

⭐ Weeks 5 - Sketching Out An Idea ⭐
🗒️🎵This is where we start our final projects. We will explore the many ways how to start a piece of music.

⭐ Weeks 6 - Arranging other parts ⭐
🎼 Once we have a structure to our pieces we will then arrange accompanied instruments with that sketch. This also might be a good time to start putting lyrics to your song if it has any.

⭐ Weeks 7-8 - Final Recording/Programming ⭐
🎙️ While building a track it's typical to record "placeholder" tracks that you will record or program better at a later point. These are the weeks that will be dedicated to refining those parts.

⭐ Weeks 9-10 - Mixing ⭐
🎚️The final stage of making a track is mixing all the sounds in a balanced way.

⭐ Weeks 11-12 - Presentations ⭐
🙋In our last two weeks I will be showcasing the final projects.

*Little to no experience necessary in recording. Minimal experience in singing or playing an instrument is helpful.
