50 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
This class will be highly interactive and students will be engaged in educational games to practice writing interesting sentences. Activities: -Brief review of strategies for expanding simple sentences -Game 1: 5 Ws Detective - Students are given a clue and have to take "case notes" to think of additional details about the clue. They will then summarize their notes into a single sentence case summary to share with the class. -Game 2: Awkward Storyteller - In this game a student (the storyteller) is given a story starter and classmates ask the storyteller questions about their story. Words are revealed that have to be incorporated in the responses to the questions about the story. It's a fun and engaging way to get the students using longer, more interesting sentences! **All students participate the entire time; no one is eliminated from the games at any point. (If you are interested in the entire series, consider enrolling in my Grammar Games Ongoing Class, which will cover a different concept each week, such as sentence structure, types of sentences, punctuation, active and passive voice, parts of a sentence, capitalization, tenses, common errors, proofreading, and more!)

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi! I have been an educator for over 20 years! I began my career teaching middle school ELA. After five years, I switched gears and became an Academic Advisor and Online Teacher for a homeschool curriculum provider. As my own children entered school, I wanted a traditional school schedule again to align with theirs, so I went back to teaching in public schools. For the last nine years, I have taught middle and high school English in an alternative education setting for a public school system. Our program offers online classes to students who cannot attend their school for a variety of reasons. I love being able to help students continue their education despite often challenging circumstances.
In addition to my 20+ years of experience as a secondary English teacher, I have a BA in Sociology and have taught Sociology courses at the community college level. I have a passion for bringing diversity of literature and content into my classes and highlighting marginalized groups and have done so through the exploration of authentic texts with open and honest discussion that encourages students to apply critical thinking to real-world problems, reflect on and challenge their own beliefs and biases, and learn how to respectfully discuss sensitive topics. In my English 12 class (high school seniors), which I have taught for nine years, we have two units devoted to the exploration of texts related to Social Justice and Gender Roles. In addition, I have participated in the Equity Training provided by my school system, completed professional development related to choosing diverse texts and how to teach sensitive topics, and lead a Cultural Diversity and Heritage Club for students.
Outside of teaching, I love reading, spending time at the beach, and hanging out with my family, which includes my husband and two teenaged daughters!
