Class Experience

In this one-time creative writing class, we will spend time studying story elements and learning all about characters while developing our own-Roblox style!

Class Experience:
We will begin class by introducing ourselves and sharing our favorite Roblox game! Learners will then pick up their drawing tools and paper, and begin to design, draw and color their own Roblox character. We will use a Main Character Planning Prompt sheet to help tell us what a main character is and start building our own.
Next, they will put their character in a setting of their choosing. Here we will discuss what a setting is, story sequence (beginning, middle, end) and plot.
Then the writing begins! They will have approximately 15 minutes to write down their ideas, either beginning their story or completing it.
We will end class with an invitation to share the pictures and details of their character. I also invite the writers to share their completed story on our classroom page for everyone to enjoy!
My goal is that children will get so excited to develop and create that they don't even realize they are practicing foundational writing skills. Learners will improve their writing abilities, develop their confidence, and practice writing about a familiar topic -Roblox!

Please note: If your learner would like to write and design a new character or continue to develop their character they have already made, they can join this class again and again! I can't wait to see what they create!

*This class does not use shared screens or the Roblox game.
Learning Goals
Learners will be able to use writing to describe a fictional character using key details, practice handwriting, stretch their imagination, work on creative storytelling and writing, become familiar with story sequence and plot and apply to their own writing.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello, I'm Ms. Rebeka, a life long learner turned teacher! Let me tell you about myself.

I am an educator with the World Awareness Children's Museum located in upstate New York, USA. Downstairs is where all the hands-on, interactive exhibits are. This is where I create and teach Storytime for preschoolers, take elementary aged children on tours around the world - well around the world IN the museum, and design and lead camps for children age 3-12 based on art, exploration, and because I love to read, literature!
Upstairs, is where all the artifacts are stored safely, and I teach virtually. Here, surrounding schools invite me virtually into their classrooms and I get to teach their students about world culture, traditions, and celebrations.

Personally, I am a mom of three teenagers, a homeschool mom, and a homeschool graduate myself. My husband and I are raising our children across from a horse farm, with our cat Ella (who thinks she is a human too), our dog Appa (yes, she is named after the flying bison from The Last Airbender), and our five fancy mice, named Chi Chi, Coco, Louise, Bunny Bo Bo, and Fudge!

I have been a homeschool instructor for 4+ years, but really see myself as a mentor or guide. I like to find children's interest and teach them topics through that interest so they are engaged and invested! I have put together book club discussions for children in both middle school and high school - I DO really love to read.

I have been working with children and their families in some capacity for 11+ years. Within Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, PTA's, to being on the Parent Council with the LARC Community Center for families with children who have Autism, and on the Board of Directors for KKC Cares, who help families work through trauma. Children are truly a passion of mine, and helping to create a space that makes them feel comfortable and confident is one of the reason's I began to teach.

I try to be a teacher that I would have liked, or would like my children to have. Someone who is kind, encouraging, thoughtful, respectful, and wants to make you smile. I still love to learn and research! Spending time with, and teaching children, let's me learn along side them. There are SO many fantastic things about our world and my goal is to share in that discovery. I love to see their faces light up with a new interesting fact, or celebrate a new found knowledge with them!

I hope you will join me in one of my learning adventures!
