Class Experience

Gaming can be a great way for autistic individuals to connect with others in a safe and structured environment. Please note this class is suitable for any learners needing structured social support, and not just those diagnosed as autistic.

Fortnite is a popular game that requires strategic thinking, teamwork, and communication. In this class, we will create an environment that is supportive and inclusive for autistic learners or anyone who is shy or who might want a small, and supported environment in which to socialize. I will focus on developing social skills, communication, and teamwork while playing Fortnite.

The first step in creating an inclusive environment is to set clear rules and expectations. I will establish a code of conduct that promotes respect, empathy, and inclusivity. I will also provide clear guidelines for communication, such as using appropriate language and avoiding bullying or teasing.

Next, I will focus on developing social skills through gaming. Playing Fortnite requires teamwork and communication, which provides a great opportunity to practice social skills. I will teach students how to work together to achieve a common goal, how to communicate effectively, and how to resolve conflicts.

I will also use gaming to develop communication skills. Fortnite requires players to communicate with each other to coordinate their movements and strategies. I will teach students how to listen actively, ask questions, and express themselves clearly and respectfully. Communication in class is encouraged in any way that each learner feels comfortable. This might be cameras on or off (after check in), using voice chat or written chat in zoom.

Finally, I will focus on developing teamwork skills. Fortnite is a team game, and success depends on each player doing their part. I will teach students how to work together, how to support each other, and how to contribute to the team’s success.

Creating an inclusive environment is important because it provides a safe and supportive space for them to build relationships. Gaming can be a great way to connect with others and learn new skills, and by creating a welcoming environment, it promotes confidence and success in our interactions with others.

Please note: It will be necessary for learners to share gamertags with me, and to be my in-game friend for the duration of the class. When sending me your name, please send in a private message, as posting publicly to the classroom violates Outschool policy.
