Game Design With Roblox (Part 2) - Ages 9-13
Class experience
US Grade 4 - 7
Intermediate Level
PART 2 IN GAME DESIGN WITH ROBLOX-- This is part 2 of the Game Design With Roblox classes that I offer for Ages 9-13. Students should take part 1 first as this class builds on what students learned in the previous beginner class, and it assumes they have a working knowledge of basic scripting and Roblox Studio tools. Future-Ready Skills-- Create2Discover classes integrate future-ready skills into the curriculum to help prepare students for a rapid-changing future. This class includes...
8 lessons//8 Weeks
Week 1Lesson 1Terrain EditorStudents learn how to use the terrain editor in Roblox Studio to create custom landforms and bodies of water as they setup their adventure world for the class.Week 2Lesson 2Simple ButtonsStudents take an important step in their coding journey as they learn how to code an action on one object in their game to make something happen to a seperate object. A simple example of this is having the player touch a button that opens a door, but the applications go far beyond this.Week 3Lesson 3Creating a TrapStudents extend what they learned in the previous lesson to create a trap. They code a hidden pressure plate to release a boulder that hits the player. Students also review how to code a player to lose health when touched by an object. This involves both logic (if/do) and humanoid properties in the player.Week 4Lesson 4Basic ModelingStudents learn how to reshape and group parts together to create more complex 3D models. They introduced to union and negation concepts in Roblox Studio that allow creators to create unique shapes for models. Students are also introduced to self-directed learning concepts and the Roblox Creator Hub, which is a great resource for teaching yourself game creation concepts.Week 5Lesson 5Advanced ButtonStudents learn how to create an advanced button that is clickable with the mouse. This involves learning how to add a click detector to their game and coding a function to activated on the click. Students also learn more about using the AI assistant available in the Roblox Creator Hub.Week 6Lesson 6Creating a ToolStudents learn how to create a tool for their player. This inolves creating a special type of model that can be held by the player. They also learn how to use welding concepts to weld different parts of the tool together. Students are challenged to use the Roblox Creator hub to teach themselves a new skill in Roblox Studio.Week 7Lesson 7Tool AnimationStudents learn how to create an animation for their tool when the player uses in the game. They learn both how to use the animation editor and code the animation to activate when the player clicks with the tool in their hand. Students are challenged to use the Roblox Creator hub to learn how to do something else with their tool.Week 8Lesson 8Tool BehaviorStudents learn how to code their tool to mine a specific resourse in their game. This requires them to use coding concepts that make the tool detect what its hitting and evaluate (logic) if it's the correct resource that can be mined by the tool. This concept can also be applied to using tools to create keys that only open certain doors.
Students will learn to..... --Customize terrain to create a game map with different landforms. --Join and shape simple parts to create more complex models. --Create challenges and puzzles in their game using variables and logic. --Use new game events to activate functions and actions. --Code an action on one object to create a result in a different object. Example: Press a button that opens a door. --Design and create a tool for their player. --Code a tool to perform an action in their game.
I have been teaching technology, coding, and 21st century skills for nearly 15 years. I am a certified elementary teacher in PA and have a Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction. I also have run my own educational technology business in the past. My goal is to help kids learn the skills they need in today's world, but also help them believe they can be the creators of new technology instead of simply consuming it.
Homework Offered
Assessments Offered
Informal Assessment: At least 2-3 times during the class, students get a chance to share the game they are creating with the class. During the share, the teacher highlights creative aspects of their game and makes suggestions when appropriate. The goal of this is really to highlight students' creativity and point out that everyone has the ability to produce unique and creative content.Grades Offered
Students should have taken Game Design With Roblox (Beginner) prior to taking this class.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
A Roblox account is required for this program. An account is free and can be setup at https://www.roblox.com/ . Students must download the Roblox Studio program to their Mac or PC to be able to create their games. This program is free and can be downloaded at https://www.roblox.com/create . Safety: Parents can choose to have their child not publish their game on Roblox. A game can be created in Roblox studio (a separate program) and not published. Students can create and play their game without ever taking it online.
