Class Experience

Graphing is a necessary skill for creating a visual representation of a function. The skill of graphing seems to be one that students often struggle with. In this 3-day summer camp, I will help students see the relationship between an equation and it's graph so that they understand what the graph represents, what the equation represents, and how the two work together.

Day 1: Students will define: translation, translation rule, function rule, and know the basic shape of four parent functions, as well as know how to use and write a translation rule.
Day 2: Students will explore the effects of changing values for 'a', 'h', and 'k' in a function rule of the form y=a(x-h)+k.
Day 3: Students will apply their knowledge from days 1 & 2 to sketch graphs from function rules and write function rules from a graph.

I will provide students with a note-taking guide and practice worksheets. Each live class session will consist of me teaching each concept, along with opportunities for students to practice each skill with immediate feedback. Live sessions are very interactive, so students are expected to use their microphone or chat box, and camera. After each class meeting, a Google Forms "Quick Check" will be posted for students to show their learning and understanding of the concepts from that day.

Learning Goals

Students will know the basic shape of four function families. Students will also be able to sketch a graph given a written description, a translation rule, or a function rule.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I taught high school math in a public-school setting for 6 years before my eldest was born. Since then I have been staying home with my kids, which I love, but I haven't given up teaching. My favorite thing has always been to work with small groups of students or one-on-one so that I can really get to know the student, their needs, and their learning style. I have tutored many students in many different classes, including middle school pre-algebra, high school ACT/SAT prep, and college Pre-calculus. Algebra 2 concepts are challenging for many students, but I have the experience working with many different types of students and want to help you succeed in this endeavor.

Parents have said:
She is patient and easy to understand. She makes the kids feel relaxed during the lesson and makes sure they understand difficult concepts. -Mark

Excellence. Great tutor helping my daughter. Explains everything in a way where she understands. -Daniel

My son felt relieved after the first lesson! She explains things in a clear way and is very aware of the student's needs and strengths. I highly recommend Rachel. -Debbie
