Beginner Level
In this class, the students will be painting fun little doodle birds sitting up in a tree. They will see how much fun it can be when you combine painting with watercolors and ink doodling. After introductions, they will be using the wet-on-wet technique to learn how to combine and blend colors. They will learn one way of adding texture to their paintings by using paper towels. They will also learn that you can add texture by layering colors when painting the leaves of their trees. While we wait for the paint to dry, the students will be encouraged to discuss the colors they chose and if they believe that those colors worked nicely together. Once the paint is dry, I will walk the students through how to add the ink doodles to create and enhance the birds. This will be another area when their creativity shines since there is no wrong way to doodle. At the end of class, the learners will be encouraged to share their fun, happy birds with the class. **Supply list: -watercolor or mixed media paper, 5.5"x8.5" or similar, 140lb (thinner paper will soak up too much water and tear) **If using a larger piece of paper, please cut it in half before class starts. -watercolor paints -paintbrush, one medium and one small -fine point black marker or pen -fine point white marker or pen (optional) -2 cups of water -paper towel or dry rag

Hi everyone! I am a graduate of Western Washington University with a B.A. in English and a minor in art history. I grew up in Washington State but have lived out on the east coast for most of my adult life. I have been a nanny, homework coach, and tutor for over 20 years. I love working with younger children and teens to help them realize the potential within. I work with kids ages 4 to 18 in reading, reading comprehension, reading remediation, grammar, language arts, elementary/middle school math, pre-algebra, organizational/study skills, HSPT, and ISEE exams.
Whenever I work with a child, whether it's in academics, art/crafting, or baking, I meet the child where they are and build them up from there; I am patient, kind, and understanding. Every child must know that a mistake is not a bad thing, just one step on the path to learning something new and that these steps are the building blocks of understanding.
During my free time, I love to paint, craft, and bake! I have been creating art and crafts for the last ten-plus years and selling them at local shows. I make 3-D paper flowers, burlap wreaths, stamped coasters, work with alcohol inks, fluid painting, watercolor painting, decoupage, and bookbinding. I hope to share all of these with the learners on Outschool!
Finally, I love to bake and cook! I used to sell my bread at a local farmers' market when I lived in Washington State. I am continually trying a new recipe or perfecting one of my own to share with everyone. When I was a nanny, baking and cooking were two of my favorite things to do with the kids. I taught them to bake cookies, bread, breakfast, and even how to roast a chicken.
Thank you for allowing me to work with your children and helping them realize they can do whatever they set their minds to. The only limits they have are the ones they place on themselves.
