Fun With the African Drum for Kids: Focus on Hands Placement

You'll receive a special discount coupon code to use for Dr. Donna's 73 classes and four groups once you have completed each section of the class!

Hey, Child Learners out there on Outschool! This class is for child learners. You also receive a certificate of achievement for accomplishing the hand placement strategy that is necessary to play the African drum. If you already know the hand placement, you will have the opportunity in this class to practice your African drum playing and learn some beginners' techniques for playing the African drum. Plus, there will be some quick and handy tips on how you can take care of your African drum so if and when you purchase one it can be a long-term investment that most likely you can receive help to purchase.
Your teacher, me, well, I learned how to play the African drum more than 20 years and taught myself how to play it with the assistance of a friend of mine. We would play African drums together in our spare time for practice! I am also at a performer level with the African drum.
If you don't know anything about the African drum, this class is also good for discovering more about an instrument that you may want to take more interest in. As well, if you know a lot about the African drum as a child musician, this class could turn into a great knowledge exchange between old and young. If you are somewhere in the middle, you will learn a lot, plus if you are a beginner, you will learn a lot.
The class will begin with instructions on how to do the proper hand placement on the African drum, followed by instructions on how to play the best beats and rhythm, and by the end of the class, you will better know how to play the African drum. The class is more recommended for beginners, rather than advanced African drum players.
I will teach the learners the correct hand placement of the African drum using PowerPoint presentation slides that I have created. I also have an audio recording of me, Dr. Donna, the teacher playing the African drum to hear rhythm and sound. I will play some music of the learners' choice from the royalty-free online music library Bensound.com and the learners will play the music with their African drums. If there is more than one learner in the class, we can play different choices of songs that the learners will like to practice their African drum playing.
Additional resources include African Drumming Online. Including teachings from the book Beginning Band.
For follow-up classes, we can use resources such as BrainPOP, and Kahoot! to make the learning even more fun!
Please note: I own a Djembe drum from Ivory Coast (Côte d'Ivoire). I'll be right in either my living room where my African drum is, or bring it to my home office space so that you can receive a demonstration of how to place your hands on the African drum.
Please note: You do not need to own the instrument to enjoy the class. You can take the class to find out more about the instrument.
Please note: There is the option with continued classes that you could publish original music that you come up with for CD Baby which is a kid-friendly online music selling site. If you publish just to the CD Baby store, it's free. If you want to distribute your music on CD Baby to Spotify, TikTok, and more, there are fees involved. The choice is yours as a family and is just an option, plus a suggestion. It is not a requirement to take this class!
Please note: If there is interest in the culture of parts of Africa, the teacher can help to teach very few words of Swahili in the time allowed with this class with Ling which is not an approved third-party resource on Outschool, it has not been vetted. It is not that is disapproved. The lesson would be extremely brief and would occur with the teacher screen sharing from her Ling account.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Optional private account set up with CD Baby that has not been vetted by Outschool. The information is not shared with the teacher. The teacher does not work for CD Baby. Actually, the teacher has audiobooks on CD Baby that have not sold for years. This does not mean that if you are interested your child or children's music would not sell. The teacher has not advertised the audiobooks much. This is just an option if with continued classes you would be interested in doing a project on original music production and selling it online even for free, or making potentially some money from the project for yourself as learners, plus your family. If there is interest in ongoing classes to learn a very little bit of Swahili, the teacher can help by screen sharing Ling and providing an extremely brief lesson within the time limits of the class.
Supply List
An African drum would be helpful, but not necessary. Access to a computer, iPad, smartphone, tablet, or laptop would also help to access Outschool. You can purchase a new African drum for under $100 that you can receive help with. If you would want to get a really expensive African drum that would create little to no issues for you in order to maintain, it is recommended that you purchase an expensive one used. You can clean it out thoroughly before using it with a good alkaline type liquid soap (please, only liquid) such as Dr. Bronner's liquid soaps which I use personally from head to toes. It works on instruments and even with cleaning as well. You do need to dilute it depending on what you are using it for.
