US Grade 1 - 2
This course is created for students that are struggling with reading, spelling, and phonics sounds. We will have fun learning and every week we will assign homework and or activities when necessary. This course is customizable based on the students needs. We will meet weekly and we will work in the following workbooks (subject to vary): Spectrum Spelling/Phonics, Scholastic Spelling (for younger students), Phonics (with Nearpod Curriculum), Raz-Plus level reading books (or Oxford Owl Tree books), and a variety of other resources. For homework, please be ready to use the third party app SplashLearn, Lalilo, and/or Khan Academy Kids. You will have to create logins and the teacher will assign homework for the student to complete for added practice outside of class. We may even use Youtube videos in class to help build more confidence in phonics sounds and materials. Since this is an ongoing course, this course has an identical structure each week and is based on the learners' skills. Therefore, the course is technically learner directed with some guidance from the teacher for materials and support. The first four weeks of lessons will look like this, unless the student needs to focus more on the previous week's materials: Week 1, July 13: Spelling Lesson 1, (possible Phonics), and Reading Lesson. Assigned spelling homework Week 2, July 20 : Spelling Lesson 2, (possible Phonics), and Reading Lesson. Assigned spelling homework Week 3 July 27: Spelling Lesson 3, (possible Phonics), and Reading Lesson. Assigned spelling homework Week 4 August 3: Spelling Lesson 4, (possible Phonics), and Reading Lesson. Assigned spelling homework Week 5 August 10th and so forth will have a similar structure. This course will be a teacher does, students do, we do style course. The teacher will write on the white board on camera or on screen letters and help the student enunciate sounds and help them read the on screen material. During the first lesson together, the student will be evaluated to see where they best fit and what level of reading they can do. Please inform the teacher of any other experience the student may have prior to class. The course may have at least 2 students attend at once, but usually is best for a one-on-one course to help the student build confidence. Make sure the student has a notebook handy and keeps the homework spelling sheets for a review in sixth lesson. Since this is an on-going course, they student may stop at any time, but they can rejoin as long as they inform the teacher when they will come back to class. The course will start back at where they last left off. I cannot wait to see you in class and join the fun.
Learning Goals
The student will improve on spelling, reading, and phonics sounds.
