Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 1
Beginner Level
Hi and welcome to my summer camp! This class meets 2 days a week to practice phonological awareness (sound awareness) and phonics skills. It will run from June though August 23 (with a break the first week of July) and you can join anytime!
**Please Note: This class is designed for beginning and/or struggling readers. It's great for kids who are just beginning to blend sounds, or are having difficulty blending letter sounds to form words. If your child is able to read or sound out CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words quickly, this class will be too easy for them. It is helpful if students know all or most letter sounds, but it is not required. Please message me if you have any questions!

Phonological (sound) awareness is the ability to recognize, identify, and manipulate sounds in spoken language, without visual representation of letters. These skills are greatly tied to a child's ability to read. When students don't have a grasp on phonological awareness, it could make reading difficult for them.

In this class, students will learn and practice phonological awareness skills through interactive, auditory and verbal word play with hand movements. Visuals, songs, and games will sometimes be used to enhance learning. The bulk of this class will focus on phonological awareness, but we will also practice phonics skills, including blending letters to read words, as well as sounding out and writing words.

Lesson Content- Each week we will do the following activities:
*Alphabet Review - Each lesson begins with a quick review/warm-up of alphabet flashcards. We will say the letter and sound it makes.
*Rhyming - Identifying and producing rhyming words
*Counting words in a sentence.
*Compound words, syllables, onset + rime
*Phonemic Awareness (individual sounds within words) - counting sounds in words, blending, segmenting, isolating, adding, deleting, and substituting sounds
*Blending letters to read or write CVC words, (consonant, vowel, consonant) CVCC words, and CCVC words.
**We will listen and identify short and long vowels, but our reading and writing will focus on short vowels only.

Day 1 Each Week: For part of the lesson, we will use a printable workmat to segment and blend spoken sounds into words. Your child will need a few small items, which we will use to represent the sounds. (buttons, coins, cheerios, lego, etc.)
Day 2 Each Week: We will practice sounding out and writing words. Your child will need a whiteboard/marker or paper/pencil.

I like to have a fun theme each week in which we base some of the words on.
June 3-7 Fruit
June 10-14 Transportation
June 17-21 Bakery
June 24-28 Bugs
July 1-5 NO CLASS

Hello and welcome! My name is Ms. Sarah. I am a credentialed teacher with 18 years of experience teaching in the public, private, and online school settings. Most of my years spent teaching have been in first grade, which I love. I enjoy teaching Math, Reading, Science, and Social Studies. I have a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education with specialization in Early Childhood. I also have a Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction.

I like to teach lessons that are interactive, engaging, meaningful, and fun. I want students to not be afraid to take risks in learning. Even if they don’t get the correct answer right away, that’s ok, as long as they try their best. Learning is an ongoing process and everybody learns at different rates and through different methods and styles.

I love animals and I have lots of pets, including dogs, birds, and bunnies. I also enjoy baking, tap dancing, and learning new things. I look forward to seeing you in my classroom!
