Note: This class may be repeated for extra practice in the virtual classroom, including the use of good manners like taking turns speaking. This lesson will focus on the sound each vowel makes, and short words will be introduced. The teacher will incorporate various styles of teaching, to best accommodate different styles of learning. The use of puppetry will draw the students attention. And a slide show presentation, featuring cute animals, will help keep children focused on the topic at...
Younger students will become more familiar with vowel sounds. Short words will also be introduced and practiced. By the end of the course both younger & older students may be able to sound out the short and long sound of each vowel. Additionally, some students will gain experience speaking in front of classmates, including a greeting time, where they may introduce themselves. Note: Shy students will gently be encouraged to participate, though sometimes simply listening in will build courage and confidence for future participation.
As you may hear in my introduction video, I have years of experience teaching young learners. I taught preschool classes, Sunday school classes, summer camp, homeschool classes and English as a 2nd language (ESL) online. I really enjoy teaching children how to read, and to inspire them to read books every chance they get!
No formal homework will be given, though students are encouraged to practice vowel sounds, and parents/guardians are highly encouraged to read books to students that specifically feature 2-3 letter words like; ant, egg, in, on, hot, and sun. In higher level books, such words may simply be pointed out while sounding out the vowel sounds together.
Students need not bring anything to class. Optional materials they may bring include small items with a clear vowel sound, such as an apple or toy egg. Such items may be shared when covering that section of the lesson plan. Students may also bring their favorite stuffed animal to comfort them & share during introductions if they choose.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Though there will be no formal assessment for this lower level course, the teacher will purpose to give feedback to each student during the class time. FYI: An ongoing course will offered, following this introduction class. And individual feedback will be provided to each parent/guardian concerning student progress, including tips for further advancement.
30 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
