Beginner Level
Students will begin to learn short vowel sounds and how to read consonant vowel consonant (CVC) words. We will use songs, rhymes, and games to learn and practice short vowel sounds. Students should recognize the letters of the alphabet and know the sounds most of the consonants make. Each class will have a homework assignment that should take the child about 15 to 20 minutes to complete. Parental help may be needed. The first class will introduce the sound, rules, and tips for identifying the short vowel sound. We will practice reading short vowel words. Students will have a homework assignment that will be due at the second class for that week. In the second class, there will be review of the information presented earlier in the week. Students will present their homework projects. In the last part of the second class. The goal of the course is for each learner to have lists of short vowel (CVC) words he or she can read independently at the conclusion of the course. Students should be able to say the short vowel sound for the five consonants and recognize when to use the short vowel sound in a word at the conclusion of the course.
Learning Goals
Students will learn to pronounce the short vowel sound for the five vowels, A E I O U, and recognize when to use the short vowel sound in a CVC word.
