Beginner Level
Greek and Latin roots, along with prefixes and suffixes, are the basis of many English words. Through this ongoing class, students will be able to “play with” Greek and Latin roots paired with a variety of prefixes and suffixes. Each class with focus on two or three roots and a few prefixes and/or suffixes that will repeat throughout the lessons. Students will have fun thinking of words with the targeted roots and making up nonsense words to help cement the vocabulary into memory. Students are invited to keep a word journal in a small notebook to document the roots, prefixes, and suffixes they learn through the class sessions. Students may come to classes as often as they like; the roots will repeat but not within 15 consecutive sessions. This class is geared toward upper elementary and early middle school students. Ages 9-12. This is a synchronous class; looking for an asynchronous option that fits your schedule? Check out my listings for the FLEX class! Class length: 30 minutes Typical class structure: 5 minutes: introduction and rules review, quick review of previous roots 5 minutes: review of the relevant prefixes and/or suffixes for the class 2 minutes: introduction of the new roots 2 minutes: BRAINSTORM! 6 minutes: word games using the roots, prefixes, and suffixes plus sharing of “nonsense” words 6 minutes: review of actual English words/definitions using the targeted roots (students may record in word journal) 1 minute: closing review, questions, goodbye Supplies: Students will need paper and writing utensil.
