Class Experience

In this one-time class, students will be able to understand two fractions as equivalent in that they are the same size.
Students will be able to recognize and generate simple equivalent fractions. (ex. 1/2= 2/4, 2/3=4/6)

This class is great for students who may struggle with understanding equivalent fractions or for students who want extra practice. This is a great course for students who have never been introduced to the concept.

I would recommend this class for students who are entering the 1st or 2nd grade in the fall or for those who may have struggled with the concept during 2nd/3rd grade and need intervention.

NOTE: If your student is ALREADY familiar with equivalent fractions, this will be more of a refresher for them. (-:

We will use paper plates to make a fraction activity so that students can see a visual representation of how fractions can be equivalent.

PLEASE MAKE SURE STUDENTS BRING MATERIALS TO CLASS. IF STUDENTS DO NOT BRING MATERIALS, IT WILL BE LESS ENGAGING AND THEY WILL SIMPLY SIT AND WATCH THE TEACHER AND OTHER STUDENTS.

Structure of class:
Welcome Song/Class Expectations/Ice Breaker- 5 minutes
Fraction Song-2 minutes
Instruction with PowerPoint- 5-7 minutes
Create Paper Plate/Show Students how to use the tool 10-15 minutes
"Show Me" Game- I will first model to the students how to play the game. Students will then be asked to create different fractions using their paper plates and then find an equivalent fraction. 10-15 minutes
Closing/Good Bye Song-2 minutes

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Teacher Kristen and I have a great passion for teaching! I graduated from Ball State with a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education with a Concentration in Psychology and Counseling. I have about 8 years of teaching experience and have taught grades 3, 4, and 5. I also homeschooled my son for 2 years before we made the decision to enroll him in brick and mortar school. I am currently the Title 1 Math Teacher for grades 4 and 5 for an online K-12 learning academy. I believe that all students can learn when they feel safe, nurtured, and encouraged. I currently reside in Ohio with my husband and 3 small children.

I try to make my classes as interactive and fun as possible! I would love to have you in my classes!
