Class Experience

We'll begin with an introduction to folktales - what they are and how they are passed down. Then we'll shift into talking specifically about the characteristics of tall tales, relating them to stories that learners might hear from their families. We'll pause here for a craft break to make some fun puppets so that learners can help illustrate the story of Paul Bunyan. Next, learners will listen the tall tale of Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox. We'll discuss what makes him a tall tale, and using that knowledge, we'll come up with some tall tales of our own by playing a game called "The Most in the World" (as in, "The strongest woman in the world" or "The smartest kid in the world" or "The biggest dog in the world"). Finally, we'll wrap up by having everyone reinforce something they learned today.

Learning Goals

Students will learn the characteristics of a tall tale and be able to identify stories that are tall tales.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
This year I graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Texas State University, majoring in theatre with a minor in mathematics. I have been fortunate to train in acting at Texas State, which is in the top 1% of BFA programs in the country; the Royal Shakespeare Company, The Globe Theatre, and Yale University's Summer Conservatory. I think of myself as a lifelong student, and I am thrilled to share my joy in learning with students all over the U.S., thanks to the Internet.
I cover both "sides" of the brain - I teach classes in theatre, including voice acting, theatre games, Shakespeare, text analysis, resume workshops, and audition workshops; and I am also an experienced math tutor in subjects up to and including Differential Equations. I was a Supplemental Instructor at my university for four semesters, specializing in Differential Equations, as well as a private tutor for students at various levels of high school math. I have noticed that lots of people run into a mental block with math because it has a reputation as a difficult subject, but I think that anyone can be a "math person"! The most rewarding moments are when students I work with say things like, "Wow, that wasn't so hard after all." When I'm not telling stories or solving equations, I also enjoy singing, watercolor painting, learning to code, and baking gluten-free desserts.

Got an idea for a class you’d like to see? (Hint: one-time classes can be great for parties!) Send me a message and the number of interested learners you have (at least 5), and I’ll set it up!
