7 hrs 30 mins in-class hoursHomework
1 hour per week. Each week we will have homework. We will discuss this during class. I will send out a homework sheet (if necessary) and we will review the homework at the beginning of the next lesson. Homework is not mandatory but is highly encouraged. It should only take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete.Assessment
I will send out feedback to the parents at the end of the semester. I will check in with the parents sooner if the learner is struggling in a specific area. I always welcome questions/comments during the semester.Class Experience
US Grade 1
This semester long course covers the second half of first grade math. The first half of the course is "Fun With First Grade Math: Semester 1". Learners should be familiar with numbers to 50, place value (ones, tens), commutative property, associative property, identity property of zero, skip counting, addition and subtraction to 20, and 2D shapes. My classes are interactive and fun. I like to engage the children and we all problem solve together. I use props, a whiteboard, and fun animated PowerPoint slides during my lessons. I always encourage learner interaction and I check in occasionally with a thumb's up to make sure there are no questions before we proceed. The topics for this semester cover: Week 1: Numbers to 120 (count, read, write) Week 2: Place value (ones, tens, hundreds) Week 3-4: Addition and subtraction within 100 Week 5: Strategies to solve word problems (key words, pictures, number line, number sentence) Week 6: Word problems using addition (3 whole numbers) Week 7-8: Word problems using addition and subtraction (adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, comparing) Week 9: Word problems using money Week 10: Geometry (2D shapes, 3D Shapes) I have 3 different first grade classes listed for semester 2. They are all different formats (per requests from parents) but cover the exact same 10 lessons. You may choose which format works best for your learner. They are as follows: Fun With First Grade Math: Semester 2 (Camp) - meets twice/week for 5 weeks Fun With First Grade Math: Semester 2 - meets once/week for 10 weeks Ongoing First Grade Math: Semester 2 - meets weekly and rotates through the 10 lessons (each lesson is standalone so you may join at any time) I will send out a worksheet and Bingo card before the lesson. This may also include a homework sheet. We play Bingo at the end of class, reinforcing what we have learned.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from Mount Holyoke College
Hello! My name is Erin Howard. I love teaching young learners. My passion is to help your young learner gain the knowledge and confidence in their basic math skills. My math classes focus on skills such as solving word problems, learning math fact families, place value, telling time, geometry, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
I have my bachelor’s degree from Mount Holyoke College. I have owned a home daycare, privately tutored students in math, and was a teaching assistant in college. I have taught over 8,000 classes online.
My goal is to bring fun, excitement, and passion into my classroom. It is important for young learners to be engaged, actively participate, and enjoy learning. This builds the foundation of how they will view their journey for knowledge in the future. I know I have accomplished this goal when my students continue to return to my classroom, and I see their personal improvement and how proud they are of their progress.
Outside of work, I am a mother of five children, and I have three grandchildren. My children are my pride and joy. My youngest two children are twins. They are nineteen years old and they are sophomores in college. We enjoy cooking, baking, playing with our dog, watching movies, shopping, and taking trips to visit new places.
I look forward to this journey with you and your young learner. I will see you in the classroom.
