In this one time class your child will be able to attend the class dressed up in their favorite costume and show it to the rest of the class. We will then program a robot to go to different toucan character's homes to go trick or treating. Your child will tell me the directions (code) that will get the robot to a toucan of their choice. I will then put the code into my programmer and your child will be able to see if they successfully got to the planned toucan, and get a trick or a treat. Your child will practice the skills of thinking ahead to plan the full route the robot will need to go. This class can be carried out for children that have completed a class before or if this is their first coding class with me. Your child does not need a robot, prior coding skills or any materials. This class will give a taste of what my weekly class will be like both live and flex versions, but can be repeated as many times as they’d like! This would make a great Halloween STEM class for enrichment for both homeschooled children and school children. Botley is programmed in a similar way to the Beebot that many schools use in Technology class. Your child will be able to build on the skills that they are learning in school with this Botley robot. Further available lessons include, dancing, playing soccer, getting around a maze, loops, and construction. *** Masks are welcome, however, masks should be removed for identification during the first four minutes of class to meet safety and privacy policies. Please note that costumes will be vetted by the educator to ensure that they met Outschool standards (secular, age-appropriate, etc.). Please me mindful not to have scary costumes as some of the students may be only 4 years old. Thank you! A follow on class, my multi-day classes are currently separated by age, 4-6, and 6-9 and 1 on 1 that all go at the pace of the learners, and dive more into the details and fun of programming the robot.
Learning Goals
Your child will learn the basic steps in programming my robot Botley.
They will think through all the steps to reach the goal and communicate these steps to me.
They will work on direction giving from the view of the robot.
Your child will collaborate to achieve the challenges where needed.

A Passionate Educator with a World of Experience.
Hello! I'm Mrs. Thelen, and I believe learning should be an adventure—one filled with curiosity, creativity, and fun! Since earning my teaching degree in England in 2002, I’ve had the joy of teaching children across the globe, from England and Denmark to Oregon, Texas, and Utah. Now, I teach children worldwide through Outschool, expanding my reach beyond the classroom. With teaching certifications in the UK, Utah, and Iowa, I’ve worked with young learners from six weeks to ten years old, primarily focusing on children ages 4–6. Teaching is not just my profession—it’s my passion.
I know that children learn best when they are fully engaged and excited about the subject. That’s why I design interactive, hands-on experiences that encourage participation in a small-group setting and one on one.
Right now, I’m especially excited about my coding/programming classes for children ages 4–8! Using a small robot, students tackle engaging challenges that teach them how to give instructions, solve problems, and think step by step—all while having fun with technology.
Teaching online has been an invaluable experience for me. During the 2020–21 school year, I worked with kindergartners in a virtual setting, ensuring that—beyond academic subjects—children could continue building connections, developing creativity, and enjoying a sense of community. That experience now shapes the way I design my online classes, ensuring your child feels engaged, supported, and excited to learn.
I've always loved being around children—it’s been a natural part of my life as the second eldest of nine siblings! My love for teaching, creating, and exploring new places has shaped the way I approach education, making every lesson an exciting journey. I can’t wait to share my enthusiasm and creativity with your child, helping them learn in a way that’s engaging, fun, and meaningful!
