Class Experience

In this one-time class, students will learn how to critically think about science experiments through dropping objects and calculating gravity. This is the same class as the popular Fun Science Experiments - Critical Thinking of Gravity Calculations - only for a younger audience! If a student is interested in dropping a certain object to see it fall, we may be able to add this in the class, especially if known ahead of time. We'll discuss what worked and did not work in the experiments and consider how to write up an experiment. Some brief pre-recorded videos of dropping objects at our house will be played in order to save time. Students may interact as much or as little as they wish. In one class, the students wanted to see an egg dropped, so we did this. Students sometimes use a timing device to determine the times of each drop. Papers will be provided that a student may write down the data, but this is only if preferred. A student may walk away from this class having simply had fun and gained an appreciation of what is involved in scientific experiments. Others may actually write up the experiments and do the calculations. I ask open ended questions during class to get students thinking. Students are welcome to answer if they wish to.

Learning Goals

Students will gain an appreciation of scientific experimentation. They will use critical thinking to consider the variables within an experiment. Some may learn how to calculate gravity and may think about the scientific method.

Bachelor's Degree in Science from University of Waterloo
Hi, I'm Trudy Field. I have a Bachelor of Environmental Chemistry degree from the University of Waterloo. I love to make teaching fun. Students learn best when learning is fun. I like to make the class interactive and entertaining.

I have always loved to teach and coach people. I love those a-ha moments when someone learns something new and experiences the happiness in knowing a skill has been mastered.

I like to tutor chemistry, physics, biology, and math courses at a junior high and high school level. I like to teach fun parts about these subjects and the fundamentals that would help a student understand parts of high school courses. I have tutored many high school students.

Coaching figure skating has been a passion of mine for over twenty years. I like to figure out how people learn and to interact with different personalities.

I believe students learn best when taught in a fun way. I like to allow a bit of autonomy in a class. While coaching skating, I offer choices of what we'll learn next - like spins or jumps. We'll inevitably cover both during that session or by the next session. I like to try to be fun in class and will allow a little bit of fun after setting guidelines to ensure learning is still the priority.

A fun project I did this winter was build a backyard skating rink! I did it through stomping the snow and then flooding the backyard with water. My son and I rigged up a simple flooding machine too!
