Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
Learners will learn about chemical bonding and what element will bond with another element given some simple rules. Basic atomic theory some basic naming of molecules will be taught. The tetrahedron orbital shape of carbon will be discussed and organic chemistry will be touched on.
Class will have some lecture-style for a portion of the class, but all learners are welcome to participate and ask and answer questions. The end of the class will entail making molecules using household items and naming them. Some learners may even have fun building molecules that may challenge the teacher to know what to name should be used! No prior knowledge is required. Learners may participate as much or as little as they feel comfortable doing.

Learning Goals

Learners will learn about chemical bonding and what element will bond with another element given some simple rules. Basic atomic theory some basic naming of molecules will be taught. The tetrahedron orbital shape of carbon will be discussed and organic chemistry will be touched on. The shape of dihydrogen monoxide (water!) will be discussed. Learners will have a basic knowledge of chemical bonding and a sense of how molecules are named by attending this class. The intent is to have fun and learn that there are lots of fun aspects of science to learn.
