Class Experience

US Grade Preschool
In this ongoing class, we will go over each letter of the alphabet and it’s sound as well as learn the numbers 0-5, 2D shapes, and colors. We will have a focused letter for the week, a focused number, color, and 2D shape. The topics covered will be Reading, Math, and Handwriting. In Reading, we will go over one letter and its sound each week. In Math, we will go over one color, one shape, and one number (0-5) each week. Students will have practice in handwriting, as we practice writing the letter of the week, the number of the week, and practice drawing the shape of the week.
In this class, a letter of the week will be introduced. For example, when the letter Aa is introduced, we will go over it’s sound and look at objects that begin with the “a” sound. Then the student will listen to a fun, phonics song about letter Aa. Next, we will practice writing the letter Aa together, as well as draw something that makes the sound of that letter. Teacher made games will also be utilized to reinforce these skills as we play together to make these lessons more interactive. One example would be to match the letter with pictures of objects that make the “a” sound such as “A” with Apple and Alligator. For our Math skill, we will practice writing the focused number for that week and looking for that many objects in a set . We will also practice drawing the shape of the week such as the circle, and look at objects that are that same shape in a group of shapes. The student can also bring things to class that are the same color of the focused color for that week. At the end of class, the student gets to share something that begins with the letter of the week and/ or things that are the same color/shape that we are going over. Depending on the student's attention that day, this class can be stopped a little earlier if needed.

Hello! My name is Mrs. Kay and I have been enjoying teaching online with Outschool since the Fall of 2021!! I have a Masters degree in Elementary Education and a Bachelors degree in Early Childhood Education. I have been a Kindergarten teacher for many years and the last couple of years teaching, I was also teaching ESL students online early in the mornings. I retired in 2021 from the public school system but wanted to continue to use my teaching skills. I was fortunate to find Out School and be able to continue teaching children in a less restrictive way. In the below video, I demonstrate how I would teach reading online to young children.
As far as my teaching philosophy, I believe that all children can learn but they learn in a variety of ways. I like to address each type of learner by using a variety of teaching methods. For example using tactile/hands on objects helps the kinesthetic learner and using lots of pictures to teach with helps the visual learner. Young children especially benefit from
using a variety of teaching methods. In my years of teaching, I have taught many children how to read but one of my greatest loves has been working with children in the early stages of the writing process. If you are interested in me helping your young learner with the early stages of writing, please check out my “Little Writers Workshop “ class where I teach young children how to use a picture that they draw to make a story.
 A little bit about me:
I was raised a farm/country girl and enjoy being around nature. My home that my husband built is surrounded by lots of woods and wildlife. The hobbies that I enjoy include cooking, baking, and gardening. In the summer, I enjoy canning fresh vegetables from our garden and going on fun trips with my family. This year, I will be the Art teacher for the school that I recently retired at so I am looking forward to this new adventure. I also hope to see your child on Out School!
