Fun Investigating Mathematics is a motivating course that includes four 55-minute sessions. Each session provides children opportunities to develop problem-solving and higher level thinking skills, to build an understanding of mathematics with age-appropriate activities using “hands-on” materials, and to instill an appreciation and love for mathematics. This course is designed for children beginning grade three in the 2020-2021 school year. Topics included in the enrichment course are aligned to the school curriculum and the Common Core State Standards and focus learning into the general categories of operations and algebraic thinking, number and operations in base ten, measurement and data, and geometry. The lessons offer an instructional approach that progresses from the use of concrete objects found around the home, to simple representational drawings on paper with pencils and crayons, and finally to abstract thinking using numbers and mathematical symbols. The student activities provide children with the opportunity to express their creativity, imagination, and artistic talents as they demonstrate their understanding and mathematical knowledge of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division in mathematical and problem solving situations.
Learning Goals
1. Students will represent and solve mathematical and real-life problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division within 100 and use the relationship between the operations to solve problems.
2. Students will use properties of operations and place value to solve multi-digit mathematical problems.
3. Students will solve problems involving measurement and time.
4. Students will gather, represent, and interpret relevant data.
5. Students will solve area and problems using multiplication and using addition and solve perimeter problems.

Supply List
Supplies that students will need are a notebook with lined paper, centimeter graph paper, and non-lined paper, a pencil with eraser, a ruler, and a measuring tape. At times there may be additional supplies students will need to complete the assignment. At the first class, a course outline will be provided describing each of the activities and the necessary supplies.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a retired certified teacher and I have always loved math. During my career, I enjoyed teaching grade 2 through grade 8. I have a master's degree in education with a specialty in mathematics.
I love thinking about mathematics and creating interesting and exciting lessons that go beyond the rote memorization of math facts and promote children to use problem-solving strategies and higher-level thinking. I like to encourage and motivate children to observe the world around them and discover and apply mathematical thinking to their observations. My goal is to build confidence in being able to "do" mathematics and to foster a love for mathematics for all children.
I truly hope that I have an opportunity to share my love for mathematics with your children
