Fun History!: The Ancient Ancient Greeks

Who said history can't be fun? In this class, we'll discover the Ancient Greek Civilization, from the lost city of Atlantis to Alexander the Great to vending machines (what?) to the influence of Hellenistic culture, + everything in between!

There will be no quizzes or tests. Students will be assessed on their classroom discussion participation.

Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
This 4-week class is an in-depth introduction to the Greek Empire. Students will learn about the cultural, political, geographical, and economic history of Ancient Greece, its conquests, its gods, and its greatest achievements.

We'll meet once a week for a fun and interactive lesson with images, videos, and lectures. We'll find answers to questions: What did the Ancient Greeks think about history and science? What were Alexander the Great's goals? Did he achieve them? How did Greek mythology define the Greek civilization? etc. We'll learn fun facts about the Hellenistic culture, talk about cheesecake, vending machines, and the lost civilization of Atlantis! 

This class does not require any prerequisite learning.

Over this course we will cover: 
Week I:  The Mycenaean Period + The dark Ages of Greece:  geography, The Trojan War, Atlantis, and environmental disasters.
Week II:  Homer + The Archaic Age of Greece: epics, gods, and the first Olympics.
Week III: Alexander's Empire:  Influential people, architecture, wars, social structure, and gender roles.
Week IV:  Hellenistic Culture + Legacy: Science and achievements, democracy, drama, and arts.

By the end of this course students will be able to: 
-Identify how geographic features defined ancient Greece.
-Identify the contributions of the Hellenistic era.
-Discuss the ideas expressed in ancient Greek literature, art, drama, and architecture.
-Describe Alexander the Great's achievements and leadership qualities.
-Identify inventions and achievements of the Greek empire
-Analyze gender roles and social structures from the Greek empire.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
I encourage students to ask questions and to have open-minded, and kind discussions during class. If any sensitive questions come up regarding topics such as warfare, intentionally cruel acts committed by humans, gender roles in history, etc. my responses will always be evidence-based, age-appropriate, and relevant to the class topic. If I need time to get more information, I will defer answers for specific questions to the next class.

No textbook will be needed for this class. There might be suggested books and articles to read as well as suggested documentaries to watch.
