What's included
1 live meeting
30 mins in-class hours per weekHomework
1 hour per week. The only homework will be their drawings if not completed by the end of the class. This will only be required if the child "wants" to draw outside of class time as I do not want a situation where the child is dreading attending the class if their drawings are not complete. Students are encouraged to review class lessons for 10 minutes each day, at least 5 days a week outside of class and to complete any drawings that they had not finished in class.Assessment
All children will be asked to repeat the words of the day and at the end of class to see if they can recall the words on their own.Class Experience
Each week we will learn new French nouns. We will always discuss the appropriate article for masculine and feminine nouns. For example "Le chat" (m) as opposed to "la chatte" (f). Students will be encouraged to pronounce the words, and also to use the words when talking about the picture they will draw in class. All children will be given tips on how to draw a picture of the assigned words through teacher demonstration and constructive and positive feedback. If your child does not like to draw, please do not enroll them, as I can guarantee they will be bored. On the other hand, if they like to draw they will have fun as it is a very constructive and positive atmosphere! More specifically: Kids who love to draw wanted! No prior experience or French knowledge is needed for this class! Each class will begin with basic french greetings. A list of over 10 french nouns each week will be explored and drawn. If you don't know to draw it, teacher instruction is available. However, many children want to create "their own way" and with their own individual style and are encouraged to do so. In this supportive learning environment children can share their art work if they want to. Throughout the class each child is encouraged to practice and repeat the pronunciation of the words as they are introduced. The identification of nouns as either masculine or feminine is thoroughly reinforced and is done through grammar tips and as many creative suggested mnemonics as possible. All classes conclude with a quick review of that lesson. All students are encouraged to keep their art work in a folder or binder or as a "digital" folder so by the end of the semester they will have created their own beginners' basic "French Picture Dictionary." Outside of class the students are expected to use the study app "Quizlet" as the lesson is posted there for their quick 10 minute daily study and review. By the end of the 7th week, regularly attending students are expected to have a good understanding of the significance of masculine and feminine words and how, if they are introduced to a new word beyond this class material, they can make an educated guess as to whether that new word is feminine or masculine in french. Students are also expected to build a good foundation of vocabulary to help them expand upon their future french learning beyond this class. Finally, students can feel good that they have actual tangible results for their learning efforts, and great reference material that they actually made on their own. Interspersed throughout each lesson are cognates: ("A cognate is a word whose meaning is blatantly obvious because it exactly, or very closely, resembles an equivalent English word. The only difference between the two words lies in their pronunciation...source: www.cliffsnotes.com). In this way (by introducing a few cognates each class) students can feel very confident that learning French is not "as hard as" they might have previously thought.
