Class Experience

This class is an introduction to the fascinating human nervous system for middle grade students, or ages 12-15. Students will explore the form and function of the human body's nervous system through a lecture and interactive group activities we will complete during our lesson. The human nervous system is fascinating because its complicated inner workings are responsible not only for controlling our body's responses to stimulus, but also for regulating many other body systems! Students will come away from this class with new knowledge of the physiology of neurons, nerves, and the brain.

The most effective way I have found to teach complex ideas such as human anatomy is through interactive slides and in-lesson games. For this class, Nearpod, a third party resource, will be used. Students are encouraged to never be afraid to ask questions or take a guess at an answer in my supportive online learning environment.

We will follow the 55 minute schedule detailed below:
5 minutes Welcome and introductions
5 minutes Discussion on current knowledge base in this subject
40 minutes Interactive Lecture: Fun Facts About Human Anatomy: The Nervous System
5-10 minutes Follow up questions and discussion

Learning Goals

After completing this one-time lesson, students will be able to:

Describe the basic makeup and function of a neuron
Discuss the functions of the human nervous system
Compare and contrast "Fight or Flight" and "Rest and Digest"
Discuss the difference between the peripheral and central nervous systems
learning goal

Parental Guidance
I will be using Nearpod for this lesson. Nearpod is an interactive slideshow application. Around 24 hours before our class, I will post a document with instructions for accessing the lesson. Around 30 minutes before our class, I will post a link to our Nearpod slideshow in the classroom comments. (Nearpod can be used in addition to Zoom on one or two devices.) Nearpod is a program which learners will log in to just before the lesson starts, then will enter a unique lesson code when the class starts. This lesson code keeps our lesson private and gives learners access to my interactive slides. On these slides, students can answer quiz questions by selecting, drawing, or writing their answer.
Supply List
If a tablet is available, it may be used to run Nearpod which allows for easier writing and drawing on the interactive slides. However, a second device is NOT required to enjoy the lesson.
External Resources

Teacher expertise and credentials
My name is Denelle, but some of my friends just call me D. I love education on all levels, and I teach in many different ways as well. I am an elementary school paraprofessional, working daily with children on the autism spectrum or with ADHD and learning challenges.
I have also taught anatomy and physiology, business and professionalism skills, pathology, and ethics in a post-secondary allied health school.
I have a passion for self-expression, planning, and creative journaling.
I believe learning is best done through several different teaching styles. Teachers are most successful when they teach to the visual, auditory, verbal and kinesthetic learner as often as possible.
I would love the opportunity to teach your children in anatomy, professionalism, and even the art of bullet journal planning and creative journaling!

Experience
Autism and ADHD: Earning my special education degree and working in SpEd classrooms for the last year.

Anatomy and physiology: Massage Therapist for 10 years. 4 years of adult education experience with a focus on skeletal, muscular, and nervous system anatomy in a wellness-based program.

Professionalism: 4 years of adult education in career planning and training in professional conduct and ethics.

Bullet Journaling: 5 years of personal experience and passion for time management and planning using a customized bullet journaling format.

Creative Journaling: 10 years personal experience in illustrative and creative journaling using a wide variety of supplies and techniques. I have led several small groups of people in exploring this style of journaling for expressing thoughts, feelings, and interpretation of reading material.
