Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 5
This course includes five lessons and it will engage students as they learn about chemical reactions in chemistry. They will learn about and experience chemistry through participating in interactive and engaging activities, which include interactive presentations, hands on activities, EXPERIMENTS, class discussions in the Outschool classroom, peer interaction via Outschool, and sharing work with the instructor for feedback! We will play weekly games via the Outschool classroom as well! All of the lessons will be pre-recorded and students will be able to view the lessons via the links that will be shared each week. They won't want to miss this!

Class 1: Lab Safety, Physical and Chemical Changes & Elephant's Toothpaste (Exothermic Reaction)

Class 2: How does heat/thermal energy affect chemical changes?
Glow Stick Heat Lab (Materials: 3 LARGE not skinny glow sticks, 3 containers of water with different temperatures (hot, room temp and ice water)

Class 3: Building Molecules & Compounds
Materials: Fruit Loops & toothpicks
(You may substitute pony beads, pipe cleaners or feel free to use a building molecules/compound kit if you have one.)

Class 4: Chemical Reaction Lab: Lemon Volcano
Materials: 2 lemons, baking soda, food coloring, Dawn dish soap, plate, tray or bowl, craft sticks OR plastic knife

Class 5: Kitchen Chemistry Chemical Reactions: Fizzing Sherbet
Materials: 1 teaspoon of baking soda, 1 teaspoon of citric acid (lemon or lime), 3 tablespoons of icing sugar and 2 tablespoons of flavored jelly crystals (or jello) and a bowl

Students will have the opportunity to share/upload images or videos of their activities, complete handouts during each lesson that will be submitted via email or the Outschool classroom, and participate in discussions using the Outschool classroom. Don't forget the review games each week! It will be loads of fun and filled with learning!
Learning Goals
Learners will gain an understanding of physical and chemical changes and how the atoms in each substance sometimes stay the same and sometimes rearrange!

Syllabus

5 Lessons
over 5 Weeks
Lesson 1:
Lab Safety, Chemical Changes, and the Elephant's Toothpaste Phenomenon
In this class, we'll prioritize safety in the lab while delving into the distinctions between physical and chemical changes. We'll then engage in an exciting experiment with Elephant's Toothpaste to witness an exothermic reaction firsthand, highlighting the dynamic nature of chemical processes.
Lesson 2:
Heat & Chemistry: Exploring Thermal Energy in Chemical Reactions
In this class, we'll explore the impact of heat and thermal energy on chemical changes, focusing on how temperature variations influence reactions. Our hands-on Glow Stick Lab will involve observing three large glow sticks in containers of water at different temperatures (hot, room temperature, and ice water). Through this experiment, we'll uncover the relationship between heat and chemical reactions, gaining valuable insights into the role of energy in altering chemical states.
Lesson 3:
Molecular Marvels: Exploring Molecules and Compounds Through Hands-On Building
In this interactive class, we'll dive into the world of molecules and compounds by building models using Fruit Loops and toothpicks (or alternatives like pony beads and pipe cleaners). Through hands-on exploration, we'll learn about molecular structures, bonding, and the formation of compounds. Get ready to unleash your creativity and understanding of chemistry in this engaging session!
Lesson 4:
Lemony Eruptions: Unleashing Chemical Reactions with the Lemon Volcano Lab
In this exciting lab session, we'll explore chemical reactions by creating a Lemon Volcano. Gather your materials, including 2 lemons, baking soda, food coloring, Dawn dish soap, and craft sticks or a plastic knife. Through this hands-on experiment, we'll witness the fascinating eruption caused by the chemical reaction between the acidic lemon juice and the alkaline baking soda. Get ready for some bubbly and colorful science fun!
