Spark your student's love of reading in this engaging book club! This club is designed with ALL students in mind (readers and non-readers). We will read a book together, then talk and discuss. Students will also work in breakout groups to respond to questions about the chapters we read. My goal in this class is to use only the best books that will interest even the most reluctant readers! The first book we will start with is "New Kid" by Jerry Craft. This is a Coretta Scott King and Newberry Award winning graphic novel that follows the story of a seventh grader named Jordan Banks. His parents enroll him in a private school where Jordan ends up being one of the only students of color. Going back and forth from where he lives, to his upscale private school, Jordan finds himself torn between two different worlds. This book by Jerry Craft tells what it is like to be the new kid, and one of color, at school. The only prior knowledge students need for this class is the ability to read. Hope to see you in class! Lesson plans: (subject to change based on the needs of the students) Week one: Introduction to book, chapters 1 and 2 with discussion Week two: chapters 3 and 4 with discussion Week three: chapters 5, 6, 7 with discussion Week four: chapters 8,9,10 with discussion Week five: chapters 11, 12, 13, 14 with wrap up

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Kirsten Ambrose and I am a certified English Teacher. I currently teach 6th grade ELA in a public school. I also have experience teaching 7th and 8th grade. On Outschool, I am offering engaging reading, writing, and math classes. When it comes to reading, research shows there are so many benefits. It is my mission to share engaging books with all kids (even the ones who don't like to read)! In my classroom, I value my students' voices. I think it is so important to create an environment where students feel they can share their ideas safely. I always aim to create engaging lessons that students can relate to and that they find enjoyable. I want students to know that learning can be fun! On a personal note, I do a lot of reading and writing myself as I am in graduate school to become a Principal! I share this information with my students because I want them to know that the skills and strategies I am teaching them, I use in my own life! If you are searching for classes that teach important skills and are fun, please consider me!
P.S. I love dogs.
