Marbling paper is a beautiful, old art form that takes skill and years of practice. However, kids can have fun creating their own marbled paper using items found around the house: shaving cream/foam, food dye, fork, and paper. At the beginning of class, we will go over the traditional way marbled paper and fabrics are made. After the short introduction to marbling, we will dive into the kid-friendly way of making marbled paper! The learners will spread their shaving cream on a cookie sheet or counter covered in plastic and then add several drops of food dye to the shaving cream. We will attempt at least one traditional marbling design, and then the kids will get to create their own design. Plus, we will go over how you can use a stencil to create a print on paper. Towards the end of the class, the kids will share their marbled paper with everyone. This class is messy, so paper or cloth towels should be near to wipe off hands. Also, parents should be nearby to help children clean off their hands if needed. I would also advise that children wear a smock since the dye can stain clothes. For easy clean-up, containing the shaving cream on a rimmed cookie sheet is a great idea. If a cookie sheet is not available, you can also tape plastic wrap to the counter to work on. Lastly, please make sure you have everything from the supply list ready to go at the beginning of class. This includes having the stencil/cut-out printed and cut out before class starts. Share a fun, messy, and creative 30 minutes with me where you'll learn a little history and create something beautiful!
Learning Goals
Students will work on their listening skills and practice following directions. They will also learn a brief history of paper marbling.

Parental Guidance
Parent supervision is suggested since this art project can get messy and the dye can stain clothes. I would recommend that a parent stand off-camera just in case the learner needs help wiping off his/her hands or needs any hands-on help with the project. Also, forks, toothpicks, chopsticks, and the like, can be dangerous if not used appropriately.

Hi everyone! I am a graduate of Western Washington University with a B.A. in English and a minor in art history. I grew up in Washington State but have lived out on the east coast for most of my adult life. I have been a nanny, homework coach, and tutor for over 20 years. I love working with younger children and teens to help them realize the potential within. I work with kids ages 4 to 18 in reading, reading comprehension, reading remediation, grammar, language arts, elementary/middle school math, pre-algebra, organizational/study skills, HSPT, and ISEE exams.
Whenever I work with a child, whether it's in academics, art/crafting, or baking, I meet the child where they are and build them up from there; I am patient, kind, and understanding. Every child must know that a mistake is not a bad thing, just one step on the path to learning something new and that these steps are the building blocks of understanding.
During my free time, I love to paint, craft, and bake! I have been creating art and crafts for the last ten-plus years and selling them at local shows. I make 3-D paper flowers, burlap wreaths, stamped coasters, work with alcohol inks, fluid painting, watercolor painting, decoupage, and bookbinding. I hope to share all of these with the learners on Outschool!
Finally, I love to bake and cook! I used to sell my bread at a local farmers' market when I lived in Washington State. I am continually trying a new recipe or perfecting one of my own to share with everyone. When I was a nanny, baking and cooking were two of my favorite things to do with the kids. I taught them to bake cookies, bread, breakfast, and even how to roast a chicken.
Thank you for allowing me to work with your children and helping them realize they can do whatever they set their minds to. The only limits they have are the ones they place on themselves.
