Full Year of 3rd Grade Integrated Mastery Method Math: Part 1 Of 4
Class experience
This session is part of a larger series titled, “A Full Year of 3rd Grade Integrated Mastery Math”. Taken as a whole, this will offer a full year's worth of math at the general 3rd grade level--focusing on gaining a deep understanding of the concept and application of multiplication as repeated addition, mastery of the basic multiplication facts, double digit multiplication and solving for an unknown. Money, measurement, basic geometry, place value and their connection to multiplication...
By the end of this 8 week session, students will be able to: --explain what identity means and how it applies to both people and numbers --demonstrate understanding of the concept of multiplication as repeated addition by building arrays or rectangles --multiply any number by 0 and 1 --Skip count by 2's, 5's and 10's --multiply fluently and accurately by 2, 5, and 10 --Find the area of rectangles and squares --Solve for an unknown in a multiplication equation --explain and demonstrate examples of general multiplication in the real world --explain and demonstrate examples of multiplying by 0, 1, 2, 5, and 10 in the real world
I am a certified teacher (Grades 1-6) with a Masters in Teaching and over 20 years of classroom, small group and one-on-one experience. Math has been my focus for the past 5 years, and I have taught this specific 3rd grade Mastery Math Method for 3 years.
--Notebook and pencil or for taking notes and/or a small white board and dry-erase marker for working problems (though most work can be completed directly on your student's device) --I will post further materials or workbooks needed in the classroom after enrollment (cost of materials will not exceed $50 for the entire year) Recommended Children's Books: --"Your Name is A Song" by Jamilah Thompkins-Bigelow --"I am Every Good Thing" by Derrick Barnes. --"Perfect Square" by Michael Hall --"Eyes That Kiss in the Corners" by Joanna Ho Optional (may be helpful to have some of these as visuals/manipulatives if available at home): **base ten or other math blocks (I will be using a virtual version of base ten blocks in my interactive slide show presentation and students will be able to manipulate them as well) Week 1: Small snacks (like raisins or cheerios) to build arrays (and snack on!) Week 2: Background on student's name (origin, why they were named that) to share with class (if students and parents are comfortable) Week 3: Things that come in 2's, 5's or 10's to share with class, small snacks for building more arrays Week 4: Pint and Quart containers Week 5: Collection of 10 or more dimes a Week 6: Collection of 10 or more nickels Week 7: Real world examples of rectangles and squares (toy blocks, magna tiles, books, dice...) Week 8: Detective gear (dress up clothes, magnifying glass...)
