Class Experience

US Grade 6
🟦 Please note there are NO classes: (1) Week of Thanksgiving, and (2) Week of Christmas, (3) Week of New Year's Eve 🟦

This is a comprehensive class designed for rising 6th Graders. From September to May, the entire year of math strands needed to master 6th-grade math is covered.

Each class session, we will start with an ice breaker discussion (e.g., would you rather question or student-driven topic). Then, Miss McKinney will demonstrate the topic of the day by solving 3 problems using Zoom Share Screen and Zoom White Board. Next, Miss McKinney will guide each student to solve one problem (e.g., child A and Miss McKinney will solve question #4 together), then have all students solve several problems (e.g., all students will solve questions #10, #11, and #12 then put their answers in private chat to teacher). This is the "I do, We do, You do" teaching method.

Miss McKinney will use different RESOURCES to help students learn the full curriculum:

* McGraw-Hill Education Math Grade 6, THIRD Edition
* Spectrum Math (CCSS), Grade 6
* Spectrum Algebra, Grades 6-8
* Spectrum Geometry, Grades 6-8
* Worksheets from IXL/Education.com

Please see the Syllabus for topics for each week/session.
Learning Goals

“Kahoot! is a global learning platform company. Kahoot! games can be played anywhere, in person or virtually, using any device with an internet connection.” A Kahoot! game is a quiz with multiple choice answers and the games include topics such as Year End Math Assessment. Kahoot! is a fun way to test a student's knowledge of a math topic such as adding fractions, multiplying decimals, solving for area of a rectangle. Kahoot! app is free and does not require an account. The teacher provides the website link (http://www.kahoot.it) and a game pin then the student creates a silly screen name; thus, no account is needed, and no personal information is given to Kahoot! “Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computing, history, art history, economics, and more, including K-14 and test preparation (SAT, Praxis, LSAT) content. We focus on skill mastery to help learners establish strong foundations, so there's no limit to what they can learn next!” Khan Academy is also a free app. "At IXL Learning, we are passionate about improving learning for all. We apply technology in thoughtful and innovative ways to unlock students' innate curiosity, creativity, and desire for knowledge. IXL Learning acquired Education.com in 2019. Education.com offers 30,000 digital and printable learning resources, including worksheets, online games, hands-on activities, lesson plans, and more, for preschool through eighth grade." Since IXL and Education.com are paid services, teacher will share screen of her account/worksheets so free to all students.
