Class Experience

This course is an introduction to realistic drawing that would be both fun and useful for all who love drawing. This course is a very detailed step by step guidance through all the main aspects of realistic drawing, such as composition, shading, understanding color, hatching techniques, layering and more! We will create five awesome art projects using different approaches and new techniques in each one of them. Students will have a chance to create a realistic landscape, still life drawing, animal drawing, botanical drawing and a portrait.

We will be using the most accessible supplies (graphite pencils and colored pencils) to create our projects. I will be uploading a video with a full length drawing process at the beginning of each week, so that the students can follow along and draw together with me. Drawing process will be divided into a few steps with detailed information on what we are doing and why. I will be doing a line drawing in the video as well as showing options for coloring/shading. Students will have one week to finish each piece and send it to the teacher through private messaging or upload it to the classroom.

Students will receive a personalized constructive feedback on their work each week, as well as support and encouragement when needed during the drawing process. I will also promote students' communication with each other by posting an interactive activity for the students to work on together each week, such as trivia quizzes on drawing and fun fact sharing.

Here's a full list of the themes covered in this course:

Week 1. Drawing a personal and unique still life art piece. What is still life and how can we make it more fun and "alive"?
Creating a composition, working on shading.
Week 2. Creating a few animal drawings (a bird and a fish) . Learning about animal anatomy, understanding colors. How to measure proportions?
Week 3. Drawing beautiful flowers and leaves. Learning about focal point, understanding how to use our creativity to enhance the reference.
Week 4. A fun and colorful landscape. Introduction to different pencil strokes, learning about textures. What is perspective?
Week 5. Drawing a realistic portrait. Understanding face anatomy, combining knowledge and techniques from the previous weeks.

Please note that this class is a "flex" class, meaning there are no live meetings and all interactions between the students and the teacher happen on the class page.

Hello! My name is Karina, I am a professional educator, artist and linguist. At this point, I have over 12 years of experience teaching students of all ages, both in-person and on-line.
I'm also proud to be one of the top art teachers on Outschool with over 7000 learners taking my classes since July 2020.

I was born in Ukraine in a family of teachers and I always wanted to become a teacher myself, gratefully my dream came true! I started as a private language tutor in Russia back in 2011, and since then I have been traveling around the world and teaching language classes. I'm a TESOL certified instructor with a BA degree in Linguistics. For five years I worked as a full-time English and Russian language instructor for language schools in China and Japan and it was an amazing journey of discovering new languages, meeting amazing people and learning how to approach students with different sets of skills and backgrounds.

After living and working in Asia for over five years I came to Canada, where I continue to teach private and group classes, both in-person and on-line.

Other than studying linguistics, I received multiple certifications from School of Fine Arts in Moscow and have been working as a professional artist since 2015. My artwork has been exhibited and sold all around the globe. In the past few years, I managed to successfully combine my passion for visual arts with my love for working with children to create unique, fun and educational art courses. I specialize in Realistic Drawing, Creative Drawing, Anime Drawing and Watercolour painting.

The most important thing for me as a teacher is to make my students feel supported and valued. Each child has an awesome potential and discovering it together with my students is the greatest gift for me as a teacher.

I’m looking forward to sharing my knowledge and experience with my students.

Thank you!
See you in the classroom!
