Class Experience

In this week of summer camp, we will learn to greet the teacher and friends, say our names, as well as identify some animals and farm animals. The lessons are structured around farm animals to gain student interest and encourage interaction. We will be learning and practicing whole language skills. We will not just be learning simple vocabulary. This is full immersion, very little English will be spoken. Children will learn through body language, hand motions and props. Lessons will be short to keep from overwhelming the children and activities will change often throughout class to keep interest. We will play fun yes/no games, sing songs and watch video clips, and have a lot of rich language discussion.

Content is subject to change, but over the course of the week students will learn to say good morning, chicks, chicks say, what’s your name, my name is, and identify/say hours, duck, dog, cat, cow, pig and sheep.

The class is intended to be highly interactive. I will assess each student’s pronunciation individually and make corrections as needed. At times, I may ask if the students have a prop related to the class. For example, “ Tienes un gato?” (Do you have a cat?) Please allow your child the opportunity to grab it if they are able. This is a great way to asses their understanding and make class a little more exciting! Materials will be provided at home along with links to songs used in class to help students continue to learn at home. No prior knowledge is needed to attend this class.

Please note, young children learning a new language do not always speak right away. There are many reasons for this. The goal of this summer camp is to provide rich language exposure in fun and interactive ways while encouraging as much output as possible.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Although Spanish is not my first language, I grew up speaking Spanish with my extended family. Our family originates from Puerto Rico. I also studied Spanish in high school and college. Over the last three years, I have been working with online ESL companies to help students learn English.
